Magnus VI, King of Norway, develop in his lifetime the reputation for the amending of Norway's ancient legal code, and granting specific definitions for the role of the king, his role privileges, protections allotted under the law to gentrymen, and the immunity of the Church of Norway. Magnus specified them here early in his reign, attempting to centralized the Norweigan government to a single entity. Among his efforts, the Magnus Lagabotes Iandslov (Magnus Lagabotes' Sate Law) stands as a testament to the political adroitness of his reign, and remains one of the earliest example of national legislation in medieval Europe. Magnus Haakonsson was King of Norway from 1263 to 1280, and the forefather of the modernization and nationalization of the Norwegian law-code, after which he is known as "Magnus the Law-mender". During his tenure as king,he also sought to further draw the Norwegian church close to the Crown and royal authority. Here, he is able to codify that relationship, stating that all of his "Catholic Successors" are duty-bound to the protection and patronage of the Church in Norway perpetually.

The Borgarthing Law and the Eidsivathing Law is dedicated to two closely linked medieval laws which were intended to cover adjacent legal provinces in eastern Norway, around and beyond the modern capital, Oslo. The core of this book consists of new translations of the two laws, based on the recent editions and translations into modern Norwegian by Eyvind Fjeld Halvorsen and Magnus Rindal.
