Der vorliegende Band vereint ausgewählte wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Publikationen von Wolfgang Schmitz aus vier Jahrzehnten. Motiviert wurden die wirtschaftsethischen Arbeiten insbesondere durch seine schon früh einsetzende wirtschaftspolitische Tätigkeit. 1950 trat er als Mitarbeiter der Präsidialabteilung in die Österreichische Bundeswirtschaftskammer ein, wurde vier Monate später Referent in der Wirtschaftspolitischen Abteilung, schließlich 1964 deren Leiter. Bereits 1963 initiierte er den für die Objektivierung wirtschaftspolitischer Diskussion und Entscheidungen auf nationaler Ebene sich höchst bedeutsam erweisenden Beirat für Wirtschafts- und Sozialfragen, dessen erster Vorsitzender er wurde. Von 1964 bis 1968 gehörte er als Finanzminister der österreichischen Bundesregierung an und fungierte in der Folge, von 1968 bis 1973, als Präsident der Oesterreichischen Nationalbank. Im Zentrum des wissenschaftlichen und politischen Lebens stand für Wolfgang Schmitz stets die Suche nach einer sozialen Ordnung, welche die tragfähigen Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten zur Selbstverwirklichung des Menschen - ausgehend von seiner Natur und (mit Johannes Messner) seinen existenziellen Zwecken - schafft. Seine Arbeiten widerspiegeln innovative Ansätze im Bereich der Wirtschaftsethik sowie Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen aus theoretischer wie praktischer Reflexion konkreter wirtschaftspolitischer Gestaltung. Als wichtigste Beiträge bzw. Ergebnisse sind daraus zu nennen: Erarbeitung des Konzepts einer Ordnungsethik, das die Wirtschaftsethik in die sozialethische Analyse der jeweils zugrunde liegenden Gesellschaftsordnung einbettet. Formulierung einer Währungsethik als sozialethische Abwägung verfügbarer Handlungsalternativen in der Geld- und Währungspolitik. Konkretisierung wirtschaftsethischer Methoden mit deren Umsetzung in Sozial-, Institutionen-, Konjunktur- und Währungspolitik.
