Jenny Paulaharju teki elämäntyönsä kuuromykkäkoulun opettajana ja kansanperinteen kerääjänä. Hän avioitui kollegansa, tunnetun kansanperinteen kerääjän ja kirjailijan Samuli Paulaharjun kanssa ja lähti vaativille matkoille tämän tutkimusapulaisena. Yli kahdenkymmenen vuoden ajan haastatteluretket suuntautuivat vaikeakulkuisille seuduille milloin Lapin erämaihin, milloin Ruijaan tai Länsipohjaan ja viimein Pohjanmaalle. Varhaisena naispuolisena kerääjänä Jenny tallensi matkoillaan suuren määrän naisten ja lasten perinnetietoa, ja muistiinpanojensa pohjalta hän kirjoitti viitisenkymmentä artikkelia sanoma- ja aikakauslehtiin. Häneltä pyydettiin miehensä lähdön jälkeen muistelmia heidän yhteisiltä keräysmatkoiltaan ja muistelmakirjaa miehestään, mutta hän ei tuntenut olevansa kirjailija ja kirjoittajana hän oli hyvin vaatimaton. Hän ei luottanut omiin kirjallisiin kykyihinsä, vaikka sai myönteistä palautetta ja arvostusta artikkeleitaan julkaisseilta lehdiltä. Vuosien aikana on toivottu, että hänen artikkelinsa koottaisiin kirjaksi. Nyt toive on toteutunut.
