Klänge, Töne und Musikwerke haben - nicht zuletzt seit Beginn der Moderne - (national-)kulturell identitätsstiftend gewirkt und tun dies in verschiedenen Kontexten noch heute. Welche medienspezifischen und soziokulturellen Voraussetzungen müssen erfüllt sein, damit Schallwellen eine kollektivbildende Wirkung entfalten können? Welche Parameter (Klang, Ton, Melodie, Rhythmus) sind dabei entscheidend? Wie werden Klänge zur Projektionsfläche ästhetischer Utopien, und existieren Zeit- und Lebensräume, in denen das Phänomen nicht begegnet? Die identitätsbildende Wirkung von Liedern, Hymnen, Klängen und Tönen ist aus geistes- wie gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Perspektive wiederholt untersucht worden. Bis dato fehlt jedoch eine systematisch-interdisziplinäre Synopse und kritische Reflexion des in den Einzeldisziplinen Erforschten bzw. noch zu Erforschenden. In den vier Abschnitten dieses Bandes, der auf eine Tagung der »Jungen Akademie« in Paris zurückgeht, wird der Frage der Herausbildung kollektiver Identität durch Musik jeweils unter kulturanthropologischem, ästhetischem, historischem und kunstpraktischem Blickwinkel nachgegangen. Die Beiträge von Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Fächer werden ergänzt durch drei Künstlergespräche mit namhaften Komponisten, Dirigenten und Opernsängern.
