Der deutsch-osterreichische Archaologe Wilhelm Wilberg (1872-1956) wurde in Athen als Sohn des Verlegers Karl Wilberg geboren. Nach seiner praktischen Ausbildung zum Architekten (Bauzeichner) war Wilhelm Wilberg als Assistent in Troja und am Deutschen Archaologischen Institut in Athen tatig. Die vorliegende Monographie verdeutlicht, dass sich in dieser Phase des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert die klassische Altertumswissenschaft bewusst wurde, dass die Bauforschung der Antike weniger auf der Geistesgeschichte als auf dem exakten Vermessen und Aufzeichnen der ausgegrabenen Architektur beruht. Wilbergs Bauaufnahmen sind in diesem Sinn Grundlage einer exakten Rekonstruktion der Vergangenheit antiker Baudenkmaler.

Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung ist nicht nur der klassisch-dorische Tempelbau, sondern auch das über Generationen hinweg gewachsene Bild, das sich die moderne Bauforschung von diesem Phänomen gemacht hat. Beispielhaft werden sechs dorische Tempel des Stadtstaates Agrigent untersucht, die in zeitlich dichter Folge im 5. Jh. v. Chr. in einem demokratischen Staatswesen entstanden und die das Formprinzip des Bautyps in großer Vielfalt absichtsvoll variieren. Es zeigt sich, daß die den Bauten zugrunde liegenden Maß- und Proportionskonzepte recht einfacher Natur waren. Zielpunkt einer solchen Bauplanung war jedoch nicht allein das Bauwerk, sondern in besonderem Maße auch die logistische Dimension des Bauprozesses.

The sheer computing power of modern information technology is changing the face of research not just in science, technology and mathematics, but in humanities and cultural studies too.
