This book presents the design and manufacturing of microsystems as well as necessary key technologies developed within the Collaborative Research Center 516. The research efforts of this collaboration are focused on active micro systems which are based on the electromagnetic actuator principle. This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held in Newark, NJ, May 22-24, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Adhesion Aspects of Polymeric Coatings held under the auspices of the Electrochemical Society in Minneapolis, MN, May 10-15, 1981. This event was cosponsored by the Dielectric and Insulation, and Electrothermics and Metallurgy Divisions. Polymeric coatings are used for a number of purposes, e. g. , decorative, protective, functional (as dielectrics or insulators) and a special application of polymeric (organic) coatings is their use as lithographic materials for making integrated circuit elements. Irrespective of the purpose of the coating, it must adhere well to the underlying substrate. So the need to under stand the factors which influence adhesion of organic coatings and the ways to attain desired adhesion is quite manifest. This Symposium was designed to bring together scientists and technologists interested in the adhesion aspects of polymeric coatings, to provide a forum for discussion of latest findings, and to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas. The technical program contained a total of 46 papers by authors from various corners of the world. The program comprised both invited overviews and contributed original research papers, as this blend is the best way to present the state of knowledge of a topic. The invited speakers were selected so as to represent widely differ ing disciplines and interests and they hailed from various aca demic and industrial research laboratories.

Since the first symposium on Recent Advances in Adhesion, held September, 1971 in Washington, D. C. , this Division of the American Chemical Society has continuously sponsored several symposia on adhesion and adhesives. The chemists have gradually realized the importance of adhesion in various fields of science and technology. During these years, the science of adhesion has steadily grown along with progress in surface science and fracture mechanics. Moreover, new adhesives have been invented and applied in actual structures, for example, structural and aerospace adhesives. In response to socio-economic demands, new forms of adhesives have been introduced to combat the problems of pollution and to promote energy-conservation. The developments of hot-melt adhesives, waterborne adhesives, and radiation-curable adhesives are vivid examples of successes in solving some of the problems. As chemists, our hatural desire is to understand how those new adhesives and new forms of adhesives are made. Thus, we are interested in learning about the chemistry of adhesives so that we may create new generations of materials to satisfy future needs. It was based on this common interest that w~ set forth to org'anize this Symposium on Recent Developments in Adhesive Chemistry. It was held from March 21 through 23, 1983 in the Westin Hotel, Seattle, Washington. The Symposium was very well attended. Recently, considerable research effort has been devoted to the fabrication of structures by adhesive bonding due to its definite advantages compared with other conventional techniques such as casting and welding. With bonding the need for stress relieving is avoided, the lead time is reduced and the design can be carried out according to optimum principles with the ability to bond different materials: for example, aluminium to steel, plastics to metals. These advantages have led to continuous efforts in studying the mechanism of bonding, in improving the properties of structural of adhesive bonding in technically adhesives and in widening the use demanding industrial applications. The aim of this book is to present recent developments in the use of adhesive bonding in structural fabrication throughout the world, as illustrations to successful appli cation of this novel technique of fabrication. For industrial applications to be successful, the engineer should be aware ofthe various types of adhesives available and of their properties, and also of the new design philosophy to be adopted in such bonded structures, and a portion of the book is aimed at highlighting the properties of the adhesives and their suitability and at assisting the engineer in his choice of the proper adhesive for the job at hand. Also emphasised in this book are the various means of destructive and non-destructive testing of bonded joints, with special mention of structures fabricated by adhesive bonding.
