Zwischen 1414 und 1418 war die Stadt Konstanz das Zentrum der europäischen Politik. Das Konstanzer Konzil sollte die Spaltung der Kirche, zumindest für den Moment, lösen – in trauriger Erinnerung geblieben ist es vor allem wegen der Verbrennung des als Ketzer verurteilten Jan Hus. Das Konzil schrieb nicht nur Weltgeschichte, sondern war auch ein Großereignis der Extraklasse: Die Stadt erlebte in vier Jahren die Absetzung dreier Päpste und die Wahl eines neuen, Zehntausende von Besuchern, 700 Dirnen und unzählige Feste. Es soll so viel Geld ausgegeben worden sein, dass Konstanz die reichste Stadt Süddeutschlands wurde. Das Buch beleuchtet die Vorgeschichte und den Verlauf des Konzils. Die Ereignisse rund um die Kirchenversammlung werden sowohl in den weltgeschichtlichen Kontext eingeordnet als auch in der Stadt Konstanz und der südwestdeutschen Region verortet. Exkurse beleuchten einzelne wichtige Personen und Aktionen, erzählen von Unterhaltsamem am Rande des Konzils und erläutern theologische Fachbegriffe. Zahlreiche Illustrationen lassen das Konzilsgeschehen vor Augen treten.
