Sobald ihre vorerst unerklärliche Schwangerschaft jedoch als tatsächlich bewiesen gilt, wird mit dem Auszug auf ihren Landsitz ein fortschreitender Selbstbestimmungsprozess in Gang gesetzt. In dieser Arbeit soll näher auf diese Thesen eingegangen und zudem untersucht werden, ob eben diese Tendenz der aufkommenden Selbstbestimmung mit der erneuten Rückkehr in das elterliche Haus und der zweiten Ehe später wieder revidiert wird und die Marquise wieder in ihre alten Verhaltens- und Abhängigkeitsmuster zurückfällt.

The literary school called deconstruction has long been dogged by the charge that it is unprincipled, its doors closed to the larger world of moral and social concern. J. Hillis Miller, one of America s leading teacher-critics, sets the record straight by looking into a series of fictions that allow him to show that ethics has always been at the heart of deconstructive literary criticism. Miller proves his point not by assertion but by doing deconstruction is here in the hands of a master teacher. Miller s controlling image is Ovid s Pygmalion, who made a statue that came alive and whose descendants (the incestuous Myrrha, the bloodied Adonis) then had to bear the effects of what he did. All storytellers can be seen as Pygmalions, creating characters (personification) who must then act, choose, and evaluate (what Miller calls the ethics of narration ). If storytellers must be held accountable for what they create, then so must critics or teachers who have their own stories to tell when they write or discuss stories. The pollution of bloodshed is a frequent theme of tragedy: Orestes is driven mad; Oedipus brings plague upon all Thebes. In historical texts we find cities intervening in the internalaffairs of others to `drive out the pollution', or making war on account of it. Political orators represent their opponents as polluting demons. Purity is a constant concern in ritual texts, and any Greek underwent many small purifications in his everyday life. Certain abnormal religiousmovements of the archaic age made `purification' the path to felicity in the afterlife. First published in hardback in 1983, Miasma is the first work in English to treat this theme in detail.
