Anhand einer großen Sammlung dieser Klassikerausgaben, die jetzt dem Kleist-Museum in Frankfurt (Oder) gehört, wird dieses wichtige Kapitel der bürgerlichen Kleist-Rezeption dargestellt. Die Volksausgaben von 1867 bis 1911, z. T. bis 1930, werden untersucht, die Kleists wachsende Bedeutung im sich formierenden Literaturkanon dokumentieren. Ausgehend von der Neuordnung des Urheberrechts geraten dabei insbesondere Buchproduktion und Buchhandel sowie die Kanonbildung in den Blick, die beim Erfolg der Klassikerausgaben für das breite Publikum eine wesentliche Rolle spielen. Since the mid-19th century, Heinrich von Kleist has been one of the classic writers in the German literary canon. Although historical and critical editions of his works are still engaging researchers, the decades-long tradition of the popular editions published for middle-class readers, in uniform bindings and cheaply priced, have been largely overlooked. Despised as mass-produced, they have seldom been properly bibliographically listed or collected anywhere, and their number is completely unknown. Based on the large collection of these classic editions now in the possession of the Kleist Museum in Frankfurt (Oder), this study at last illustrates this important capital of bourgeois Kleist reception. Popular editions from 1867 to 1911 – and in some cases to 1930 – are examined, demonstrating Kleist’s growing significance in the developing literary canon. The reshaping of copyright law brought book production and the book trade as well as the creation of a canon into the spotlight, all of which played an important role in the success of classic editions for the general public.
