Celebrating a mysterious annual rite, the authors disclose secret and sometimes tragic circumstances; evident only to those who have experienced the incidents . . . until now.The stories in this collection will take you for perilous jaunts on All Hallows Eve, send you sprinting down a beach at midnight, drown your soul in inky waters, soak you in the blood of wizards and dump you down the rabbit hole of insanity.Whether these are parables that predict or tales to instruct, prepare yourself to be,This is the first WorD (Write or Die) Halloween-themed anthology. The short stories contained herein were all written for, and read, during the first three annual Halloween reading events. These stories range from wonderfully frightening to frightfully preposterous. Sometimes shocking and unpredictable, this disquieting collection will keep you guessing at the sanity of the authors who write these tales.

Spur Award Nominee: How Galveston, Texas, reinvented itself after historic disaster: “A riveting narrative . . . Absorbing [and] well-illustrated.” —Library Journal The Galveston storm of 1900 reduced a cosmopolitan and economically vibrant city to a wreckage-strewn wasteland where survivors struggled without shelter, power, potable water, or even the means to summon help. At least 6,000 of the city's 38,000 residents died in the hurricane. Many observers predicted that Galveston would never recover and urged that the island be abandoned. Instead, the citizens of Galveston seized the opportunity, not just to rebuild, but to reinvent the city in a thoughtful, intentional way that reformed its government, gave women a larger role in its public life, and made it less vulnerable to future storms and flooding. This extensively illustrated history tells the full story of the 1900 Storm and its long-term effects. The authors draw on survivors’ accounts to vividly recreate the storm and its aftermath. They describe the work of local relief agencies, aided by Clara Barton and the American Red Cross, and show how their short-term efforts grew into lasting reforms. At the same time, the authors reveal that not all Galvestonians benefited from the city’s rebirth, as African Americans found themselves increasingly shut out from civic participation by Jim Crow segregation laws. As the centennial of the 1900 Storm prompts remembrance and reassessment, this complete account will be essential and fascinating reading for all who seek to understand Galveston’s destruction and rebirth. Runner-up, Spur Award for Best Western Nonfiction—Contemporary, Western Writers Of America

Little Jimmy written by Franco La Monica and has been published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-18 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

At times, the main Jimmy character is as real as real can get, and at times, Jimmy becomes as fictional as one can get. This novel combines many parts of fiction, nonfiction, and a futuristic vision together with an autobiographical comedy, all in one. Also, it tells the story of his unconventional spiritual process in achieving his spiritual zenith. As they say, a road with no obstacles leads nowhere. So was the turbulent road toward his Damascus. They also say that the road most traveled is not the only road to destiny. Jimmy deviated. It took a lot of sculpting and chiseling from the potters to achieve perfection; however, Jimmy was not more than willing to be sculpted, so he kicked like a mule and bucked like a stallion that accidentally rubbed his butt on a cactus. And like a real mule, he was destined to carry heavy loads. This novel begins in 1962, in a tough part of the Bronx, New York, the same time span as when Kennedy was assassinated. He was a ten-year-old child that migrated from Italy to the United States of America with only one dollar in his pocket. He also had the vast English vocabulary of only one word: okay. One can only imagine the rest.

The Ballad Of Bonnie D Vere written by Roy Buckle and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02 with Fiction categories.

The story of 'Bonnie' d'Vere is based on the real life existence of the last of the lady pirates. The development of the 'Sea Eagle', as she was eventually called, becomes a fascinating story-for she was progeny of one of the best aristocratic French families. The story is set at the end of the Napoleonic period when there was an uneasy peace between England and France, and there were rumblings of war between North and South America. Against a background of violence, which accompanied the eradication of slavery, the convoluted and bloody tale unfolds. It is also the tale of the magnificent Scot, Henry MacGeever, whose pioneer activities in a fragmented South Africa are woven around that of Katherina Josephine d'Vere. He was the only man capable of taming her.

Stories For The Years written by Luigi Pirandello and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-05 with Fiction categories.

Regarded as one of Europe’s great modernists, Pirandello was also a master storyteller, a fine observer of the drama of daily life with a remarkable sense of the crushing burdens of class, gender, and social conventions. Set in the author’s birthplace of Sicily, where the arid terrain and isolated villages map the fragile interior world of his characters, and in Rome, where modern life threatens centuries-old traditions, these original stories are sun baked with the deep lore of Italian folktales. In “The Jar,” a broken earthenware pot pits its owner, a quarrelsome landholder, against a clever inventor of a mysterious glue. “The Dearly Departed” tells the story of a young widow and her new husband on their honeymoon, haunted at every turn by the sly visage of the deceased. The scorned lover, the despondent widow, the intransigent bureaucrat, the wretched peasant—Pirandello’s characters expose the human condition in all its fatalism, injustice, and raw beauty. For lovers of Calvino and Pasolini, these picturesque stories preserve a memory of an Italy long gone, but one whose recurring concerns still speak to us today.

“A cracking good yarn . . . sheer storytelling power . . . James Alexander Thom is one of the finest historical novelists writing today. . . . Anyone who thinks there’s nothing left to be said about the Lewis and Clark expedition should read this book.”—John Sugden, author of Tecumseh: A Life Following the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson sends Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the newly acquired territory. To survive, the two captains need an extraordinary hunter who will be able to provide the expedition with fresh game, and a sign-talker to communicate with the native tribes. They choose George Drouillard. It is Drouillard, an actual historical figure, who becomes our eyes and ears on this unforgettable odyssey. A magnificent tale told with intelligence and insight, Sign-Talker is full of song and suffering, humor and pathos. James Alexander Thom has created the rarest reading experience: one that entertains us even as it shows us a new vision of our nation, our past, and ourselves. “Excellent . . . It is at once an adventure story [and] a historical document. . . . Even though many readers know the story of Lewis and Clark, Thom’s novel will give them new insight.”—The Indianapolis Star (four-star review)
