Scholarship often presumes that texts written about the Shoah, either by those directly involved in it or those writing its history, must always bear witness to the affective aftermath of the event, the lingering emotional effects of suffering. Drawing on the History of Emotions and on trauma theory, this monograph offers a critical study of the ambivalent attributions and expressions of emotion and “emotionlessness” in the literature and historiography of the Shoah. It addresses three phenomena: the metaphorical discourses by which emotionality and the purported lack thereof are attributed to victims and to perpetrators; the rhetoric of affective self-control and of affective distancing in fiction, testimony and historiography; and the poetics of empathy and the status of emotionality in discourses on the Shoah. Through a close analysis of a broad corpus centred around the work of W. G. Sebald, Dieter Schlesak, Ruth Klüger and Raul Hilberg, the book critically contextualises emotionality and its attributions in the post-war era, when a scepticism of pathos coincided with demands for factual rigidity. Ultimately, it invites the reader to reflect on their own affective stances towards history and its commemoration in the twenty-first century.

The publication of the first edition of A Bilingual Dictionary of the Hebrew and Aramaic Old Testament by Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner in 1953 marked a major event in Old Testament studies. It presented a vast treasure of lexicographical material, with renderings into both German and English. Its publication superseded at once all other existing dictionaries, mostly stemming from the 19th century. The Dictionary offered for the first time a strictly alphabetical order of entries, rather than a simple arrangement by roots. This feature not only saved the scholar much time and work, it also set the standard for future lexicographical work on the Old Testament. In 1958 a new, expanded edition was published which included an extensive supplement. Many reprints have followed since, all following the original presentation of a dictionary and supplement in two separate volumes. To this very day the Dictionary remains the only complete and comprehensive English-German dictionary of the Old Testament. Doch auch die gesellschaftliche Stigmatisierung Homosexueller hatte für das Leben schwuler Männer und lesbischer Frauen erhebliche Konsequenzen. Für die NS-Zeit ist dieses Kapitel der deutschen Zeitgeschichte bis heute nur lückenhaft aufgearbeitet. Noch dürftiger ist der Forschungsstand zur Nachkriegszeit. Der vorliegende Band führt aktuelle Forschungsansätze mit den Ergebnissen ausgewählter Pionierarbeiten zusammen. Dabei geht es um verschiedene Aspekte der Verfolgungspraxis, aber auch darum, warum es Ende der 1960er-Jahre schließlich zu ersten Strafrechtsreformen kam und wie sich die Aufarbeitung der Verfolgung gestaltete. Between 1935 and 1969, around 100,000 men were sentenced to prison under Section 175, which was considerably tightened by the Nazis, not to mention the consequences of social stigmatisation for the lives of gay men and lesbian women. This chapter has only been sketched out incompletely for the Nazi era. The state of research on the post-war period is even poorer. The present volume brings together recent studies to the state persecution of homosexuals. Concerning the Nazi era, regional aspects are the focus of attention, especially differences between urban and rural areas. In the post-war period, the focus is on the question of how homosexual life took place in East and West Germany and why the first reforms of criminal law finally took place at the end of the 1960s.

In a century marked by totalitarian regimes, genocide, mass migrations, and shifting borders, the concept of memory in Eastern Europe is often synonymous with notions of trauma. In Ukraine, memory mechanisms were disrupted by political systems seeking to repress and control the past in order to form new national identities supportive of their own agendas. Denn die Neubürger, in Israel als Diaspora-Einwanderer einer großen "Heimkehrbewegung" betrachtet, waren nicht bereit, sich fraglos den damit verbundenen Normen und Erwartungen zu unterwerfen. Lou Bohlen untersucht, wie der bislang geltende jüdisch-israelische Konsens, Judentum als Norm und der Holocaust als zentraler Bezugspunkt der Erinnerung, in den Diskursen der russischsprachigen Neubürger zum umstrittenen Terrain wird. Daraus entsteht eine spannungsreiche Konfliktgeschichte über konkurrierende Erinnerungen und Gedächtnisnarrative in Israel und ihren jeweiligen politischen Funktionalisierungen.
