Am Beispiel der beiden ehemaligen Landkreise Liebenwerda und Schweinitz (Brandenburg) untersuchte Sebastian Rick die politische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung in einer ländlichen Region der sowjetischen Besatzungszone. Gestützt auf umfangreiche Recherchen, gelingt es ihm, ein detailliertes Bild über den Prozess der Diktaturdurchsetzung in den Jahren 1945 bis 1949 zu zeichnen und dabei zahlreiche bis heute wirksame Verzerrungen der DDR-Geschichtsschreibung zu widerlegen. Die Studie weist anhand vieler Beispiele nach, wie rücksichtslos KPD/SED in Zusammenarbeit mit der sowjetischen Besatzungsmacht den Transformationsprozess der Gesellschaft vorantrieben. Viele Themenschwerpunkte dieser Arbeit – wie der Einmarsch der Roten Armee, die Arbeit der sowjetischen Geheimdienste sowie die Umgestaltung der Wirtschaftsordnung – wurden bisher auf regionaler Ebene kaum erforscht.

Jewish Cattle Traders in the German Countryside, 1919-1939, explores the social and economic networks in which this group operated and the informal but durable bonds between Jewish cattle traders and farmers that not even incessant Nazi attacks could break. Stefanie Fischer combines approaches from social history, economic history, and sociology to challenge the longstanding cliché of the shady Jewish cattle dealer. By focusing on trust and social connections rather than analyzing economic trends, Fischer exposes the myriad inconsistencies that riddled the process of expelling the Jews from Germany. Jewish Cattle Traders in the German Countryside, 1919-1939, examines the complexities of relations between Jews and non-Jews who were engaged in economic and social exchange. Politik in der Stadt und Gemeinde? Nein, hieß es noch in den ersten Jahrzehnten der Bundesrepublik: Um Politik geht es hier nicht, sondern um Selbstverwal tung, wie auch das Grundgesetz im Art. 28 formuliert. Politik sei nur die "Große" in Bonn und in der Welt da draußen. In Städten und Gemeinden gab es deshalb bis in die sechziger Jahre häufig große Koalitionen und teilweise bis heute eine proportionale Beteiligung auch der großen Oppositionsparteien an Dezernenten- und Beigeordnetenposten. Seit den siebziger Jahren ist eine drastische Politisierung der Kommunalpo litik eingetreten - und das im doppelten Sinne: Das Bewußtsein ist gewachsen, daß gerade vor Ort grundlegende politische Entscheidungen über die Lebens umstände der Bürgerinnen und Bürger getroffen werden; und dem hat sich auch die Politikwissenschaft verstärkt durch eine Intensivierung kommunalpolitischer Forschung, insbesondere seit den siebziger und achtziger Jahren, angeschlossen. Von diesem wissenschaftlichen Boom zeugt auch dieser Band. Ausführlich werden zunächst die Entwicklung, die Grundbegriffe, die Grundprobleme und die Perspektiven der kommunalpolitischen Forschung im ersten Teil einführend erörtert. Systematisch werden anschließend zwei zentrale Dimensionen der Kommunalpolitik untersucht: Die institutionelle Form der Gemeindeverfassung an hand der Entwicklung in Nordrhein-Westfalen und den neuen Bundesländern sowie die organisatorische Reorganisation der Gemeindepolitik anhand einiger Reformmodelle und ihrer Praxis. ’Long live liberty, equality, fraternity and dynamite’ So went the traditional slogan of the radical liberals in Greater Swabia, the south-western part of modern Germany. This book investigates the development of what the author terms ’popular liberalism’ in this region, in order to present a more nuanced understanding of political and cultural patterns in Germany up to the early 1930s. In particular, the author offers an explanation for the success of National Socialism before 1933 in certain regions of South Germany, arguing that the radical liberal sub-culture was not subsumed by the Nazi Party, but instead changed its form of representation. Together with the famous völkish fraction and the leftist fraction within the chapters of the Nazi Party, there were radical-liberal associations, ex-members of radical-liberal parties, sympathizers with these parties, and notables with a radical orientation derived from family and regional traditions. These people and associations believed that the Nazi Party could fulfil their radical - liberal vision, rooted in the local democratic and liberal traditions which stretched from 1848 to the early 20th century. By looking afresh at the relationship between local-regional identities and national politics, this book makes a major contribution to the study of the roots of Nazism.
