Das Thema ist in hohem Maße individualisiert. Zwar findet in der Öffentlichkeit eine Form der Enttabuisierung statt, bedenkt man beispielsweise die hohen Zahlen von Kriegs- und Unfalltoten, die täglich die Nachrichten füllen oder die martialischen Todesszenarien in Videospielen und Blockbustern auf den Kinoleinwänden. Vergleichbares zeigt die seit mehreren Jahren umstrittene Debatte um Sterbehilfe, ebenso wie der arglos anmutende Umgang mit Symbolen des Todes, wie dem Totenkopf als Schmuckstück oder Tattoomotiv. Die Allgegenwart offenbart dabei jedoch eher eine Distanzierung, die sich in konsumistischer Banalität durch Ökonomisierung und Medialisierung des Themas zeigt. Sokrates' Gespräch in Platons Dialog "Phaidon" bezieht sich auf die Themen des Todes und des Weiterlebens und enthält philosophische Grundgedanken über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Nicht zuletzt sind die Ausführungen des Sokratesschüler zum Todesthema evident, weil sie vom letzten Lebenstag des antiken Philosophen berichten, bevor er durch das Gift des Schierlingsbechers sterben soll. Vor diesem Hintergrund sind die Überlegungen einzelner Philosophen der Geschichte zum Todesthema interessant. Die vorliegende Arbeit kann und will jedoch kein Kompendium darstellen, das repräsentative philosophische Todesdiskurse von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart nachzeichnet. Es soll exemplarisch ein Text des bis heute einflussreichen Autors aus dem frühen 17. Und dieses findet statt in dem Modus eines offenen Textverfahrens, der Form des Essays, dessen Erscheinen von der literaturgeschichtlichen Forschung vor allem mit Montaigne verknüpft ist. Sein Essay „Philosophieren heißt sterben lernen“, dessen Titel bereits den von ihm in der frühen Neuzeit wieder aufgegriffenen Ansatz der antiken Todesverständigung andeutet, soll Aufschluss über seine Kommunikation über das Todesthema geben, ebenso wie sein einige Jahre darauf verfasster Text „Von den Gesichtszügen“.
