Viinasammiosta saattoi vielä nousta, kirjoittaa kirjan ja tallentaa viimeiset ajatuksensa kirjeisiin. Lauri Hokkasen aikaisempi kirja Kenen joukoissa seisoin – taistolaiset ja valtioterrorin perintö (2021) oli kirjavuoden puhutuimpia teoksia. Seppo Toiviainen oli Hokkasen ystävä ja poliittinen kumppani.
