The question of whether Britain is "apart from or a part of Europe" (D. Abulafia) has gained significance in recent years. This book reassesses an underexplored field of early modern transnational history: the variety of ways in which connections between Britain and German-speaking Europe shaped developments. After a comprehensive introduction, this book is divided into three parts: cross-border transfers and appropriations of knowledge; coping with alterity in intergovernmental contacts; and ideologising the cultural nation. The topics range from the exchange of religious and political ideas over court life, diplomacy, and espionage to literary and philosophical debates. Particular attention is paid to the media processes involved and to the practical value of knowledge about the "other" in different historical contexts. The picture emerging from the case studies reveals an intriguing dynamic: Mutual interest and ambiguous entanglements deepened precisely at a time when the British and German worlds diverged evermore from each other in terms of social and political structures. This fascinating volume sheds new light on Anglo-German relations and will be essential reading for students of early modern European history.

Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Die Russische Föderation ist reich an Rohstoffen wie Erdöl und Erdgas. Insbesondere in Zusammenhang mit der weltweit hohen Nachfrage nach Rohstoffen und steigenden Ölpreisen wächst die russische Wirtschaft dynamisch. 2006 betrug das inflationsbereinigte Wirtschaftswachstum knapp 7%. Das stetige Wachstum hat nach jahrelangem Transformationschaos zu einer wirtschaftlichen und politischen Wiedererstarkung Russlands geführt. Jedoch sind die positive russische Wirtschaftsentwicklung und die damit in Zusammenhang stehenden sozialen Reformen zur Verbesserung der Lage des Landes stark abhängig von der Energie- und Rohstoffindustrie. Die langfristige wirtschaftliche nationale und internationale Konkurrenz- und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit sowie die nationale Stabilität des Landes erfordern eine Diversifikation der Wirtschaftsstruktur. Im Kontext der Globalisierung und Wissensgesellschaft kommt dem Aufbau wissensintensiver Industrien dabei eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Zwar verfügt Russland über eine bereits vorhandene, gut aufgestellte technologische und wissenschaftliche Infrastruktur, aber es fehlt an neuem, aktuell notwendigem und zukünftig wichtigem Know how. In den meisten Schlüsselindustrien der russischen Wirtschaft fehlen sowohl die technologischen als auch die personellen Grundvoraussetzungen zu einer Modernisierung der veralteten Strukturen. Die vorliegende Arbeit knüpft hier an. Sie analysiert den Wissensbedarf der russischen Wirtschaft und beschreibt ansatzweise die Akquirierung notwendigen Wissens in Form des Transfers von Wissensprodukten am Beispiel der Region Nischni Nowgorod. Problemstellung: Das theoretische Grundprinzip der Arbeit ist der ökonomische Markt als Ort des Zusammentreffens von Angebot und Nachfrage und dem Austausch von Gütern. Als Gut wird dabei die Ressource Wissen verstanden. Im Kontext der Arbeit wird Wissen als Produkt betrachtet und eine Unterscheidung impliziter und expliziter Wissensprodukte vorgenommen. Das ermöglicht die Beobachtung des Austauschs von Wissen innerhalb und außerhalb von Orga-nisationen sowie zwischen Volkswirtschaften. Der Fokus wird im weiteren Verlauf auf den Nachfrager, in diesem Fall allgemein die Russische Föderation, gelegt. Um Aussagen über die Nachfrage treffen zu können, wird der Wissensbedarf analysiert. Die Analyse erfolgt mittels der Erstellung eines Ist-Wissensprofils der russischen Wirtschaft und eines Soll-Wissensprofils ausgewählter Branchen in der Region [...]

Since the 1990s, following the end of postmodernism, literary theory has lost much of its dynamics. This book aims at revitalising literary theory exploring two of its historical bases: German poetics and aesthetics. Beginning in the 1770s and ending in the 1950s, the book examines nearly 200 years of this history, thereby providing the reader with a first history of poetics as well as with bibliographies of the subject. Particular attention is paid to the aesthetics and poetics of popular philosophy, of the Hegel-school, empirical and psychological tendencies in the field since the 1860s, the first steps towards a plurality of methods (1890–1930), theoretical confrontations during the Nazi-period as well as the rise of formalist and anthropological approaches from the 1930s onwards. All approaches are evaluated regarding their relevance for academia as well as for the general history of education. If possible, international references and contexts of the relevant theories are taken into account. In sum, the analysis not only shows how differentiated historical accounts in the field were but also reflects how current literary theory could move forward through the rediscovery of sunken ideas.

Gelehrte der reformierten Universitat Heidelberg und der jesuitisch dominierten Universitat Mainz tauschten zwischen 1583 und 1622 zahlreiche Kontroversschriften aus. In diesen Schriften befassten sich die Autoren mit zahlreichen Themenfeldern der Theologie und daruber hinaus. So wurden historiographische, juristisch-staatswissenschaftliche, philologische und auch astronomisch-mathematische Fragen ebenfalls zur konfessionellen Streitsache erhoben. Diese Konkurrenzsituation bewirkte zwar die Teilung der gelehrten Welt, regte jedoch zugleich die wissenschaftliche Betatigung an. Die Kontrahenten lasen die Schriften der Gegenseite aufmerksam und versuchten, diese in zahlreichen Publikationen zu widerlegen. Die Kontroversschriften wurden so unbeabsichtigt zu einer interkonfessionellen Verbindungsstelle der gelehrten Welt, an der sich einige Transferprozesse nachweisen lassen.
