Der deutsche 'Erzhumanist' Konrad Celtis (1459--1508) ist einer der großen Archegeten der neueren deutschen Literaturgeschichte. Durch seine lyrischen Zyklen (Oden, Elegien, Epigramme) wie durch seinen lebenslangen Einsatz für die studia humanitatis wird der erste gekrönte Dichter auf deutschem Boden zur Schlüsselfigur des Humanismus nördlich der Alpen. Ein Jahrhundert vor Opitz unternimmt er den wegweisenden Versuch, im Anschluß an Tendenzen des italienischen Humanismus antike Gattungen, Diskurse und Geselligkeitsformen systematisch in die deutsche Literatur einzuführen. So ist Celtis nicht nur Autor der ersten humanistischen Poetik (»Ars versificandi et carminum«), er legt mit den »Amores« (Nürnberg 1502) auch den ersten bedeutenden Zyklus neulateinischer Dichtung in Deutschland vor, dessen Initialwirkung für die Folgezeit kaum zu überschätzen ist. Ziel der Studie ist es, Celtis' Projekt einer deutschen Dichtung lateinischer Sprache umfassend vor seinem geistes- und literarhistorischen Horizont nachzuzeichnen. Von der »Ars versificandi« über die Ingolstädter Rede bis zu den »Amores« werden dabei erstmals alle bedeutenden Texte und Bilddokumente in einer systematischen, diskursorientierten Monographie erfaßt. In ihrem Mittelpunkt steht der große Zyklus von Liebeselegien (»Amores«), der nach seinen wichtigsten Aspekten (Gattungsfragen, Nationaldiskurs, lyrische Selbstdarstellung) untersucht wird. Auf diese Weise zeichnen sich Konturen eines Werkes ab, das als Gründungsdokument der neueren deutschen Literatur gelten kann.

Conrad Celtis' (1459-1508) »Germania generalis« führt nicht nur zu einem zentralen Thema in seinem OEuvre, sondern des deutschen Humanismus insgesamt: zum Diskurs um die deutsche Nation. Innerhalb seines Gesamtwerks kommt der »Germania generalis« dabei die Bedeutung zu, Celtis' dichtesten Beitrag zu dieser humanistischen Diskussion um 1500 darzustellen. Das lateinische Gedicht wird hier erstmals zusammen mit Übersetzung und Kommentar herausgegeben und durch Studien zu seinen Inhalten erschlossen. In einem ersten Teil werden mit der Sichtung der Überlieferung und ihrer Dokumentation sowie mit Untersuchungen zur Text- und Überlieferungsgeschichte die Vorarbeiten für die Edition der »Germania generalis« geleistet. Anmerkungen zur formalen Gestaltung des Gedichts und ein ausführlicher Stellenkommentar runden den Editionsteil ab. Gegenstand des zweiten Teils der Arbeit sind Studien zu Celtis' Deutschlandkonzeption. Sie gehen den Ursprüngen von Celtis' Plan einer historisch-geographischen Darstellung Deutschlands seit dem Ingolstädter Bildungsprogramm von 1492 nach und stellen die maßgeblichen Modelle einer humanistischen Landeskunde, Flavio Biondos »Italia illustrata« und die Deutschlandbeschreibungen Enea Silvio Piccolominis, vor. Im Zentrum der Studien steht die Interpretation der »Germania generalis«, die die zentralen historischen und geographischen Aspekte von Celtis' Deutschlandkonzeption herausstellt. Ausgehend davon wird unter Berücksichtigung des übrigen OEuvre, vor allem der »Amores« und der »Norimberga«, Celtis' nie realisiertes Projekt einer »Germania illustrata« methodisch und inhaltlich umschrieben. Ein Ausblick auf die Entwicklung der humanistischen Landesbeschreibung in Deutschland nach Celtis' Tod schließt die Studien ab.

As an eloquent homage to Dürer ́s life, it brings us closer to the creation and meaning of his paintings than ever before. Dürer's Lost Masterpiece considers the celebrated German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), his time and his legacy. It tracks the history of a crucial, and often overlooked, turning point in his career, when Dürer stopped painting altarpieces after falling out with the Frankfurt merchant Jacob Heller over a commission. The story of this painting, as Dürer ́s lost masterpiece, functions as a lens through which to view the new relationship developing between art, collecting and commerce in Europe up to the Thirty Years ́ War (1618-1648) when global trade and cultural exchanges were increasing. At the heart of the book is the argument that merchants, and their mentalities, were crucial for the making of Renaissance art and its legacy for modern art. The book draws on a decade of research, and uniquely draws the reader into the rich emotional worlds of three merchants each of whom typified the evolving relationship between art and commerce in that entrepreneurial, and often ruthless, age. Performative literary culture emerged as a set of practices that shaped production and distribution of learning in late medieval and early modern Western Europe, both in Latin and the vernacular. Performative literary culture encompasses the plays, songs, and poetry performed for live audiences in (semi-)public spaces and the organizations championing performative literature through meetings and events. This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of “antiquity” and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in the period of 1400–1700.
