Konservasi dilakukan pada bahan pakan berserat berkulitas tinggi berupa hijauan pakan (forage), sedangkan peningkatan kualitas dilakukan pada pakan berserat tinggi berkualitas rendah (roughage). Kesemuanya dilakukan untuk memenuhi persediaan pakan yang berkualitas sepanjang tahun. Selain itu juga dibahas potensi hasil sisa tanaman petanian dan perkebunan untuk pakan, serta pakan komplit untuk menunjang produktivitas ternak.
