Die Konstruktionen von „Weiblichkeit“, die im 19. Jahrhundert im Zuge der Entstehung der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft propagiert wurden und mit einer Polarisierung der Geschlechtscharaktere einhergingen, sind in vieler Hinsicht bis heute prägend. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt am Beispiel der jüdischen Zeitschrift Sulamith, wie die entstehenden bürgerlichen Weiblichkeitsvorstellungen in Abgrenzung zu den faktischen Realitäten von Frauen entwickelt wurden und sich u.a. mithilfe einer entsprechenden Mädchenbildung durchsetzen konnten. Dabei wird deutlich, wie die entstehenden jüdisch-bürgerlichen Geschlechterverhältnisse einerseits von der Mehrheitskultur beeinflusst waren und diese andererseits mit geprägt haben. Insofern versteht sich diese Studie als ein Beitrag dazu, die jüdische Bildungsgeschichte in Deutschland als einen Aspekt deutscher Bildungsgeschichte sichtbar zu machen.

Moderne Bildungskonzeptionen sind, so der erste Anschein, geschlechtslos. Aus der prinzipiell gleichartigen "Natur" der Menschen folgt nicht nur ein (a-geschlechtliches) gleiches Recht auf Bildung, auch die avisierten Bildungsziele scheinen weitgehend davon zu abstrahieren, ob eine Frau oder ein Mann bildet bzw. gebildet wird. In jüngerer Zeit ist dieser erste Anschein zunehmend aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven problematisiert worden. Der Band greift diese Anregungen auf und liefert Bausteine zu einer Bildungstheorie als gendered concept. Der erste Teil wendet sich der Geschichte zu und thematisiert die nicht-hinterfragten, gleichwohl präsenten geschlechtsspezifischen Implikationen moderner Bildungstheorien. Der zweite Teil erörtertet zum einen konkrete Problemfelder gegenwärtiger Schulpraxis. Der dritte Teil diskutiert die Herausforderungen einer Bildungstheorie als gendered concept im Spannungsfeld von Moderne und Postmoderne. In das Blickfeld geraten dabei die Fragen nach dem Geschlecht als Konstruktion, dem gesellschaftlichen Ort von Bildung sowie der Bedeutung der (neuen) Medien bei der Auflösung oder Affirmierung von Geschlechtsrollen.

Argues that affirming the irreducible differences between men and women can lead to more transformative politics than the struggle for abstract equality between the sexes. In The Symbolic Order of the Mother Luisa Muraro identifies the bond between mother and child as ontologically fundamental to the development of culture and politics, and therefore as key to achieving truly emancipatory political change. Both corporeal development and language acquisition, which are the sources of all thinking, begin in this relationship. However, Western civilization has been defined by men, and Muraro recalls the admiration and envy she felt for the great philosophers as she strove to become one herself, as well as the desire for independence that opposed her to her mother. This conflict between philosophy and culture on the one hand and the relationship with the mother on the other constitutes the root of patriarchys symbolic disorder, which blocks womens (and mens) access to genuine freedom. Muraro appeals to the feminist practice of gratitude to the mother and the recognition of her authority as a model of unconditional nurture and support that must be restored. This, she argues, is the symbolic order of the mother that must overcome the disorder of patriarchy. The mediating power of the mother tongue constitutes a symbolic order that comes before all others, for both women and men.
