Based on the analysis of 52 conversion narratives to various religious groups, A New Model of Religious Conversion utilizes case studies for comparison of converts' backgrounds, network influence, and conversion narratives. The author convincingly illustrates a "fit" between the converts' background and the religion they convert to, such as between disorganized family backgrounds and highly structured religions. Conversely, those from highly structured backgrounds often convert to more "open" groups. The book also makes it clear that not all conversions are influenced by networks or align themselves with a social constructivist view of a conversion as an "account." Taking converts' trajectories seriously, the author makes a strong case for the application of biographical sociology to the study of conversion and (American) sociology overall.

Hinsichtlich der Konversionsforschung zum literalsinnorientierten Christentum in Deutschland bzw. Europa betritt die Arbeit weitgehend Neuland; anders als Islamkonversionen wurde dieses Phänomen bislang kaum analysiert. This volume analyzes the conversion of German women to Christian and Muslim movements which both follow a literal sense-orientated interpretation of their Holy scriptures and whose communities show many similarities, with qualitative methods. The focus of the work is the functionality of the conversion; the conversion developes a bunch of positive outcomes or "functions" (Robert K. Merton) for the female converts. Some of them are similar or equal in both religions, some different due to the theological differences and the distinct standing of both religions in German society. The analysis breaks new grounds regarding the research of conversion to literal sense-orientated Christian communities in Germany and Europe. Other than conversion to Islam, this phenomenon was scarcely analysed so far.
