Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit hat zum Ziel, die Entwicklung der Tischsitten, wie in Norbert Elias' Buch [...]1 dargestellt, nachzuvollziehen. Durch das „Vorrücken der Peinlichkeitsschwelle“ ergeben sich nach Elias „ganz allgemeine neue gesellschaftliche Verhaltensnormen“, die nach Ulrich Tolksdorf in Bezug auf die Tischsitten drei Phasen im „Prozeß der Zivilisation“ erkennen lassen: 2 - Das Mittelalter, in dem weitgehend ohne Regeln und mit bloßen Händen gegessen wurde, - eine zweite Phase zwischen dem 16. und dem 18. Jahrhundert, in der sich ein umfassender Verhaltenskodex ausformte, - schließlich eine dritte Phase im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, in der der erreichte Standard nur unwesentlich verändert wurde. Der Darstellung der Entwicklung des Verhaltens bei Tisch soll ein Abriß der Tischsitten der Antike vorausgehen, die uns allerdings nicht wie in späterer Zeit in Form von Benimmregeln überliefert sind, sondern nur anhand literarischer Denkmäler rekonstruiert werden können. Exemplarisch soll das dem Dichter Petronius zugeschriebene Satyricon, ein „Spiegel zeitgenössischer, literarischer und sozialer Ereignisse neronianischer Zeit“,3 hinsichtlich der dargestellten Tischsitten abgehandelt werden. Danach zeichnet der größere Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit anhand der bei Elias aufge - führten Quellen die Entwicklung der Tischsitten nach. Der Dreiteilung nach Ulrich Tolksdorf in Mittelalter, 16.-18. Jahrhundert und 19.-20. Jahrhundert folgend, soll dann zunächst der mittelalterliche Verhaltensstandard, Ausgangspunkt in Elias‘ Arbeit, dargelegt werden. Nach der Schilderung der Änderungen des menschlichen Verhaltens, die in der Renaissance vonstatten gehen und im 18. Jahrhundert zunächst zur Ruhe kommen, folgt eine kurze Darstellung der letzten Phase. Den Zustand der gegenwärtigen Tischsitten eingehender zu beschreiben, deren Verfall von einzelnen Autoren konstatiert wird, ist aus Gründen der Knappheit der Arbeit nicht geboten. THE SENSE OF SMELL The nose is normally mistakenly assumed to be the organ of smell reception. It is not. The primary function of the nose is to regulate the temperature and humidity of inspired air, thereby protecting the delicate linings of the lungs. This is achieved by the breathed air passing through narrow passageways formed by three nasal turbinates in each nostril. The turbinates are covered by spongy vascular cells which can expand or contract to open or close the nasal pathways. The olfactory receptors, innervated by the 1st cranial nerve, are located at the top of the nose. There are about 50 million smell receptors in the human olfactory epithelia, the total size of which, in humans, is about that of a small postage stamp, with half being at the top of the left and half at the top of the right nostril. The receptive surfaces of olfactory cells are ciliated and extend into a covering layer of mucus. There is a constant turnover of olfactory cells. Their average active life has been estimated to be about 28 days.

Should laws about sex and pornography be based on social conventions about what is disgusting? Should felons be required to display bumper stickers or wear T-shirts that announce their crimes? This powerful and elegantly written book, by one of America's most influential philosophers, presents a critique of the role that shame and disgust play in our individual and social lives and, in particular, in the law. Martha Nussbaum argues that we should be wary of these emotions because they are associated in troubling ways with a desire to hide from our humanity, embodying an unrealistic and sometimes pathological wish to be invulnerable. Nussbaum argues that the thought-content of disgust embodies "magical ideas of contamination, and impossible aspirations to purity that are just not in line with human life as we know it." She argues that disgust should never be the basis for criminalizing an act, or play either the aggravating or the mitigating role in criminal law it currently does. She writes that we should be similarly suspicious of what she calls "primitive shame," a shame "at the very fact of human imperfection," and she is harshly critical of the role that such shame plays in certain punishments. Drawing on an extraordinarily rich variety of philosophical, psychological, and historical references--from Aristotle and Freud to Nazi ideas about purity--and on legal examples as diverse as the trials of Oscar Wilde and the Martha Stewart insider trading case, this is a major work of legal and moral philosophy.
