Für Unternehmen ergeben sich Herausforderungen aus der Dynamisierung der Märkte, der Internationalisierung von Beschaffung und Absatz, der Verlagerung von Produktion und Verwaltung, der steigenden Anzahl von Unternehmenskonzentrationen sowie der steigende Einfluss von global agierenden Großkonzernen, was einen „survival of the fittest“ im Markt verschärft. Viele Unternehmen sind der Ansicht, dass eine Kooperationsstrategie am ehesten dazu geeignet ist, diesen Trends Rechnung zu tragen. Ziel einer Kooperation ist es, durch Bündelung unternehmensindividueller Wettbewerbsvorteile einen strategischen Gesamtwettbewerbsvorteil für die Kooperation und damit für alle Unternehmungen in ihr zu erzielen. Während die Verwendung des Begriffs Wettbewerbsstrategie als eine Differenzierung zu einer kooperativen Strategie verwendet werden könnte, wird die unternehmerische Praxis vielfach von „co-opetition“ geprägt. So können beispielsweise Kooperationspartner bei der Schaffung von neuen Märkten in einer komplementären Beziehung zueinander stehen und bei der Aufteilung dieser Märkte in einer Wettbewerbsbeziehung. In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur sind verschiedene Konzepte zu finden, deren mutmaßlicher Erfolg auf Kooperation beruht. Dies soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit durch das folgende Vorgehen eingehend vorgestellt und diskutiert werden: Zunächst soll der Begriff Logistik und seine Entwicklung näher erläutert werden. In Kapitel 2 werden die Grundlagen von Netzwerken herausgearbeitet. Kapitel 3 erläutert die Grundlagen logistischer Netzwerke. Kapitel 4 beschäftigt sich mit den unterschiedlichen Typen logistischer Netzwerke.

Currently the notion of "sustainability" is used in an inflationary manner. Therefore the authors start with a definition which is stable to serve as an anchor for further research as well as for discussions among scientists, managers and politicians, ideally across different disciplines. The character of this book is purely conceptual. The argumentation is based on comparison of new and demanding requisites with existing models (process and network architectures in the field of logistics). Formerly neglected impacts on the environment will be included. Main features of a new approach will be developed which are capable to avoid these impacts and to align logistics with the requirements of sustainability. In order to make logistics sustainable large parts will have to be reinvented. The focus needs to be on decoupling transportation activities from economic growth rates.
