Salah satu indikator penting eksistensi CU terletak pada misi. Oleh sebab itu, rumusan misinya harus benar-benar jelas. Tanpa kejelasan misi, hasil yang didapat adalah kebingungan (confused). Namun, apakah rumusan misi yang jelas menjamin misi itu akan terealisasi? Jawabannya: “Belum Tentu.” Mengapa? Dalam beberapa kasus, ada banyak CU yang memiliki rumusan misi yang bagus tetapi eksekusinya buruk. Misi hanya pajangan, fokusnya pada kuantitas—mencari anggota sebanyakbanyaknya dan mengejar setoran simpanan dari mereka demi meningkatkan jumlah aset—uang. Bisa-bisa orang-orang berduitlah yang menikmati. Tak ada ukuran apakah para anggota mereka sudah sejahtera atau kualitas hidup mereka meningkat atau belum. Terjadilah apa yang disebut Mission Drift. Itu menjadi fenomena yang mewabah dalam gerakan CU akhir-akhir ini. Anggota banyak tapi tidak diberdayakan secara optimal. Akhirnya, para anggota mereka seperti kocar-kacir, masuk anggota di beberapa CU—pinjam sanasini. Apa yang terjadi kemudian? Para anggota terbeban utang berlebihan (overindebtedness). CU menanggung kredit lalai menggunung. Itulah yang akan terjadi kalau para anggota tak berkualitas dan rasa kepemilikkan yang rendah. Fakta itu menyadarkan kita bahwa CU harus dapat menyeimbangkan antara kinerja keuangan dan kinerja sosial melalui revitalisasi Kepemilikkan Lokal (Local Ownership) yang kuat.
