Interreligiöser Dialog ist von der Überzeugung getragen, daß sowohl der Respekt vor dem Anderen als auch das gemeinsame Lernen mit- und voneinander Grundlage für eine friedliche Koexistenz der Religionsgemeinschaften ist. Damit ist die Begegnung, das Gespräch und die konstruktive Auseinandersetzung mit und zwischen Angehörigen verschiedener Religionen gemeint - im Rahmen des vorliegenden Buches von Christen und Muslimen, aber auch innerhalb der Christenheit und innerhalb der Gemeinschaft der Muslime. Theologisch gibt es zwischen den Religionen durchaus bleibende Unterschiede; weiterkommen läßt sich hier im Berichtigen von Mißverständnissen und von da aus im Formulieren gemeinsamer Werte. Für das kirchliche und gesellschaftliche Leben der kommenden Jahre ist insbesondere eine vertiefte Beschäftigung mit Geschichte, Tradition und Theologie des Islams und vor allem mit dem Koran geboten. Nicht nur Christen und von christlicher Tradition geprägte Menschen, sondern auch Kirche und Religion fernstehende Zeitgenossen, denen muslimische Nachbarn, Arbeitskollegen und Mitbürger nicht gleichgültig sind, zeigen Interesse an der Eigenart des Islams. Sie wollen sich aus erster Hand, also über und durch die Urkunde dieser Religion, informieren lassen. Während hinsichtlich des Christentums noch restliches Wissen vorhanden ist, herrscht bezüglich Islam und insbesondere Koran ein erhebliches Wissensdefizit. Dieses Lese- und Quellenbuch versammelt Texte zu zentralen Themen des Christentums und des Islams. In den Texten werden zwar Glaubenszeugnisse, theologische Positionen und Kontroversen wiedergegeben - sie werden aber nicht aus Glaubenssicht bewertet.
