During the Cold War, the United States enabled the rise of President Syngman Rhee’s repressive government in South Korea, and yet neither the American occupation nor Rhee’s growing authoritarianism ever became particularly controversial news stories in the United States. Could the press have done more to scrutinize American actions in Korea? Did journalists fail to act as an adequate check on American power? In the first archive-based account of how American journalism responded to one of the most significant stories in the history of American foreign relations, Oliver Elliott shows how a group of foreign correspondents, battling U.S. military authorities and pro-Rhee lobbyists, brought the issue of South Korean authoritarianism into the American political mainstream on the eve of the Korean War. However, when war came in June 1950, the press rapidly abandoned its scrutiny of South Korean democracy, marking a crucial moment of transition from the era of postwar idealism to the Cold War norm of American support for authoritarian allies.

Outposts Of Empire written by Steven Hugh Lee and has been published by McGill Queens University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with History categories.

"Following World War II the United States, determined to prevent the extension of Soviet and Communist Chinese influence, took the lead in organizing the defence of Western interests in Asia. In Outposts of Empire Steven Lee explores the foreign policy objectives of the United States, as well as those of Great Britain and Canada, and examines the role that economic and military aid played in their attempts to establish pro-Western, anti-Communist governments on the periphery of Communist East Asia." "Drawing on a wide range of recently declassified documents, Lee outlines the regional and international context of American diplomatic relations with Korea and Vietnam and analyses the relationship between containment, the bipolar international system, and American and European concepts of empire at the beginning of the era of decolonization. He argues that although policy makers in the United Kingdom and Canada adopted a more defensive containment policy toward Communist China than the United States did, they generally supported American attempts to promote pro-Western elites in Korea and Vietnam."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Soviet American Relations In Asia 1945 1954 written by Russell D. Buhite and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with Political Science categories.

Based on recently released documents Buhite focuses on those parts of Asia that became objects of Soviet-American competition. He portrays the Soviet Union as an aggressive and expansionist power whose aspirations included not only control of the Kuril and Sakhalin islands but also domination or hegemony in Mongolia, Sinkiang, Manchuria, Korea and Japan and eventual expulsion of the West from Southeast Asia. Buhite believes that the United States must bear heavy responsibility for the intensification of the Cold War in Asia. He also explains how thoughtful leaders adopted a posture of national interest based largely on such intangibles as credibility and national prestige.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation's oldest civil rights organization, having dedicated itself to the fight for racial equality since 1909. While the group helped achieve substantial victories in the courtroom, the struggle for civil rights extended beyond gaining political support. It also required changing social attitudes. The NAACP thus worked to alter existing prejudices through the production of art that countered racist depictions of African Americans, focusing its efforts not only on changing the attitudes of the white middle class but also on encouraging racial pride and a sense of identity in the black community. Art for Equality explores an important and little-studied side of the NAACP's activism in the cultural realm. In openly supporting African American artists, writers, and musicians in their creative endeavors, the organization aimed to change the way the public viewed the black community. By overcoming stereotypes and the belief of the majority that African Americans were physically, intellectually, and morally inferior to whites, the NAACP believed it could begin to defeat racism. Illuminating important protests, from the fight against the 1915 film The Birth of a Nation to the production of anti-lynching art during the Harlem Renaissance, this insightful volume examines the successes and failures of the NAACP's cultural campaign from 1910 to the 1960s. Exploring the roles of gender and class in shaping the association's patronage of the arts, Art for Equality offers an in-depth analysis of the social and cultural climate during a time of radical change in America.

The Korean Armistice written by Sydney D Bailey and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-07-13 with History categories.

Little is known by practitioners or academics about the dynamics of war termination. This book describes the negotiation and implementation of the armistice following the Korean war and the Korean phase of the Geneva conference (1954). It also analyzes some of the problems of coalition diplomacy. It thus foreshadows some of the problems that were encountered in conducting a UN-authorized war in the Gulf, and in the problems of negotiating a secure peace.
