Eating Korean In America written by Sonia Ryang and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-31 with Social Science categories.

Can food be both national and global at the same time? What happens when a food with a national identity travels beyond the boundaries of a nation? What makes a food authentically national and yet American or broader global? With these questions in mind, Sonia Ryang explores the world of Korean food in four American locations, Iowa City, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Hawaii (Kona and Honolulu). Ryang visits restaurants and grocery stores in each location and observes Korean food as it is prepared and served to customers. She analyzes the history and evolution of each dish, how it arrived and what it became, but above all, she tastes and experiences her food—four items to be specific—naengmyeon cold noodle soup; jeon pancakes; galbi barbecued beef; and bibimbap, rice with mixed vegetable. In her ethnographic journey, Ryang discovers how the chewy noodles from Pyongyang continue to retain their texture and yet are served differently in different locales. Jeon pancakes become completely decontextualized in the United States and metamorphosed into a portable and packable carry-out food. American consumers are unaware of the pancake's sacred origin. In Hawaii, Ryang finds that it is the Vietnamese restaurant that serves unexpectedly delicious galbi barbecued meat. Intertwined in the complex colonial and postcolonial contexts, Korean galbi and Japanese yakiniku can be found side by side on the streets of Honolulu frequented by both the locals and tourists. In writing Eating Korean in America: Gastronomic Ethnography of Authenticity, Sonia Ryang is as much an eater as a researcher. Her accounts of the cities and their distinctive take on Korean food are at once entertaining and insightful, yet deeply moving. Ryang challenges the reader to stop and think about the food we eat every day in close connection to colonial histories, ethnic displacements, and global capitalism.

Existing In Costume written by Chan-Hyo Bae and has been published by The Museum of Photography, Seoul this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-15 with Art categories.

The book covers five photography series which Chan-Hyo Bae has worked on so far, Self-Portrait, Fairy Tales, Punishment, Witch Hunting and the new series Jumping into the Oil Paintings. Each series have been divided into individual categories but the book’s editing shows that all series are above the same photographic context. As the artist had been fiercely living as a stranger in the U.K. but was unable to be absorbed and experience alienation and anger as an Asian living in Western culture, his artistic challenge to the meta discourse of Western culture became the key word of this series of work. Meanwhile, Jumping into the Oil Paintings is an extension of Existing in Costume but also a very different attempt. In terms of the formality of the work, Existing in Costume is a process that visualizes the artist's feelings of prejudice and alienation through elaborating exquisite plan and production, while Jumping into the Oil Paintings do not simply damage but deconstruct the subject's essence by gilding on the printed photography or by copying the paintings images and transfer it to animal skins. His new series could be seen as a way more aggressive challenge to the system of Western thought and through this, we might carefully gauged the direction of his future works. This photography book which contains 52 works from five series include articles of Kim Hong-hee, the art critic and the previous director of Seoul Museum of Art and also Bill Kuenhoven’s article, who has executive capacity in international photography scene since he had been worked as an editor of several major photography magazines for the past 20 years including Hotshoe Inernational. Thus, those articles will support an in-depth understanding of the artist’s works, has a meaning as a publication aiming at overseas photography experts and readers.
