Hänen tunnetuin teoksensa on "Putkinotko", joka on Savoon sijoittuva yhdenpäivänromaani. Lehtonen syntyi aviottomana poikana, ja äiti jätti Lehtosen huutolaislapseksi jo puolivuotiaana. Lehtosen onneksi koitui papinleski Augusta Wallenius, joka huusi Lehtosen itselleen, kun tuleva kirjailija oli neljävuotias.
