Korrelate gelten als eine der komplexesten Erscheinungen der deutschen Syntax. Deutsch-Lernende sind sich häufig unsicher, ob und wann bei einem bestimmten Valenzträger ein Korrelat vorkommen muss bzw. kann. Zudem fällt es ihnen schwer, die Funktion dieser überwiegend keinen lexikalischen Wert aufweisenden Elemente im Satz zu verstehen, da sie in der Regel annehmen, dass Korrelate nur eine Besonderheit der deutschen Sprache seien. Auch das Italienische verfügt jedoch über ein ähnliches syntaktisches Phänomen, das in der Didaktik des Italienischen als Fremdsprache ein bis heute kaum erforschtes Problemfeld darstellt. Diese Arbeit ist ein erster ausführlicher Versuch, die Korrelate im Deutschen und ihre Entsprechungen im Italienischen zu beschreiben.

Sentential proforms are highly interesting from the point of view of grammatical theory, since their occurrence is determined not only by syntax, but also by prosody and semantics.
