It is now a little more than 11 years since the idea of writing a personal and scientific biography of H. A. Kramers took hold of me. A few days earlier I had been lecturing, in a course on field theory, on the renormalization proce dures of relativistic quantum field theory. Since the students had considerable trouble understanding the physical basis of the procedure, at the end of the lecture T explained that renormalization is not an exclusive quantum or relativistic procedure. A careful treatment of classical electron theory as started by Lorentz and developed in detail by Kramers also requires re normalization. The students appeared quite interested and I promised them that I would explain all this in more detail in the next lecture. I could have looked up this material in Kramers' book, but I remembered that Kramers had stressed this idea in a course I had attended in Leiden in 1938-1939. I did dig up some of these old notes and, although they were considerably less transparent than my recollection seemed to indicate, they reminded me force fully of the thrilling days I had spent in Leiden with Kramers. Kramers' deep insight and originality were apparent even when distorted by my opaque notes. The students had never heard of these ideas of Kramers' and were totally unaware of his work in field theory.

Jersey, 1944. Lieutenant Earl Kramer, sole survivor of a ditched USAF bomber, crawls out of the sea one night and cuts the throat of a German sentry. Big mistake. Jersey is under Nazi occupation, and the lives of its inhabitants depend on an uneasy co-existence with their oppressors. Though Kramer's motives were entirely patriotic, to the islanders he presents a terrifying risk to their very survival. But to Kramer, a man governed by an overriding sense of duty, this stronghold of Hitler's armies proves too irresistible a target to ignore... Kramer's War is a powerful novel about the savagery of war, from the bestselling and Booker-shortlisted author of Goshawk Squadron.

The Dutch scientist Hendrik Kramers (1894-1952) was one of the greatest theoretical physicists of the twentieth century--and one of a mere handful who have made major contributions across the whole field. Physicists know his name from, among other things, the Kramers dispersion theory, the Kramers-Heisenberg dispersion formulae, the Kramers opacity formula, the Kramers degeneracy, and the Kramers-Kronig relations. Yet few people know more than the name, or recognize the full depth and range of his contributions. In this book, D. ter Haar seeks to change that. He presents for the first time anywhere a comprehensive discussion of Kramers's scientific work, and reprints twelve of his most important papers. The author shows us that Kramers's remarkable and diverse work makes him at least the equal of such celebrated physicists as Fermi and Landau. He takes us through Kramers's groundbreaking research in such subjects as quantum theory, quantum electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, and solid-state physics. The papers he reprints include Kramers's derivation of the dispersion formulae that led to Heisenberg's matrix mechanics; his classic paper on the Brownian-motion approach to chemical reactions; a pioneering paper on polymers; and a paper on renormalization, a concept first introduced by Kramers and now one of the basic ideas of modern field theory. This book will change how we view the course of twentieth-century science and will show that Kramers was indeed one of the masters of modern physics.

TheKramers-Kronigrelationsconstitutethemathematicalformulationofthe fundamental connection between the in-phase to the out-of-phase response of a system to a sinusoidal time-varying external perturbation. Such connection exists in both classical and quantum physical systems and derives directly from the principle of causality. Apart from being of great importance in high energy physics, statistical physics, and acoustics, at present the Kramers-Kronig relations are basic and widely-accepted tools for the investigation of the linear optical properties of materials, since they allow performing the so-called inversion of optical data, i.e. acquiring knowledge on dispersive phenomena by measurements of absorptive phenomena over the whole energy spectrum or vice versa. Since the late ’80s, a growing body of theoretical results as well as of experimental evidences has shown that the Kramers-Kronig relations can be adopted for e?ciently acquiring knowledge on nonlinear optical phenomena. These results suggest that the Kramers-Kronig relations may become in a near future standard techniques in the context of nonlinear spectroscopy. Thisbookisthe?rstcomprehensivetreatisedevotedtoprovidingauni- ing picture of the physical backgrounds, of the rigorous mathematical theory, and of the applications of the Kramers-Kronig relations in both ?elds of l- ear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy. Some basic programs written for the 1 MATLAB environment are also included. This book is organized as an argumentative discourse, progressing from the linear to the nonlinear phenomena, from the general to the speci?c s- tems, and from the theoretical to the experimental results.

The escape from metastable states via noise-assisted hopping and/or tunneling is pivotal to many scientific disciplines. It impacts on such diverse physical, chemical and biological processes as diffusion in solids, chemical reactions, nucleation phenomena and transfer of matter and information in biological systems. This volume surveys recent developments in the rate theory of both equilibrium and nonequilibrium processes. The understanding of the classical and quantum-mechanical concepts of this theory is deepened and extended in order to cope with various problems which, in particular, arise in complex systems. A wide range of applications are discussed such as correlated hops in periodic potentials, fluctuating barriers, transitions to limit cycles, discrete time dynamics, random walks on selfsimilar structures, and nonexponential decay in disordered systems is covered and profoundly discussed. For research workers and graduate students in chemistry, physics and biology with an interest in reaction rate theory.
