Frühchristliche Zugänge zu Phänomenen von Krankheit und Gesundung unterscheiden sich deutlich von Texten der griechischen und hellenistisch-römischen Medizin. Dennoch können diese Quellen die jüdisch-christliche Tradition in ihren anthropologischen und soteriologischen Potenzialen zum Sprechen bringen. Im traditionsgeschichtlichen Vergleich werden Konzepte von Krankheit und Heilung besser greifbar. Frühchristliche Erzähltexte konzeptualisieren Leiden grundsätzlich salutogenetisch, also optimistisch von der Stärkung, Rettung und Heilung her, anstatt von den Ursachen der Krankheit. Fallstudien erzählter Krankheitsbilder und traditionsgeschichtliche Untersuchungsschritte, die über die antik-medizinischen Texte hinaus weitere hellenistisch-römische Literatur einbinden, ergeben unverwechselbare Profile der Konzeptualisierung von Krankheit und Heilung in frühchristlichen Texten. Der Band verknüpft neutestamentliche Wissenschaft und Patristik im Blick auf das breit etablierte Christologumenon des Arztes wie auch auf anthropologische Aussagen, die jede einfach konturierte holistische Sicht auf den menschlichen Körper weit transzendieren.

This book reconstructs the theory of signification implicit in Aristotle’s De Interpretatione and its psychological background in his writing De Anima, a project often envisioned by scholars but never systematically undertaken. I begin by explaining what sort of phonetic material, according to Aristotle, can be a significans and a phônê. To that end, I provide a physiological account of which animal sounds count as phônê, as well as a psychological evaluation of the cognitive content of the phônai under consideration in De Interpretatione: names, verbs, and assertive sentences. I then turn to noêmata, which, for Aristotle, are the psychological reference and significata of names, verbs and assertive sentences. I explain what, for Aristotle, are the logical properties a significatum must have in order to be signified by the phonetic material of a name, verb or assertive sentence, and why noêmata can fulfil those logical conditions. Finally, I elucidate the significans-significatum relation without making use of the modern semantic triangle. This approach is consonant with Aristotle’s methodology and breaks new ground by exploring the connection between the linguistic and psychological aspects of Aristotle’s theory of signification.

The controversy between Wellhausen and Kaufmann concerning the history of ancient Israel and the question of historical reconstruction has prompted this study. While Wellhausen’s hypothesis introduces a synthesis of the religious development of ancient Israel, Kaufmann’s work emphasizes the singularity of the Israelite religion. Their respective works, which represent the methodologies, presuppositions and the ideologies of their times, remain an impetus to further inquiry into the history of ancient Israel and its religion. Both Wellhausen and Kaufmann applied the historical-critical method, but were divided as to its results. They agree that the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible is the primary source on which to base writing about the history of ancient Israel, but differ concerning the authority of its text. This book illustrates the real clash between Wellhausen and Kaufmann, with the aim of providing some basis for reaching a middle ground between these two poles. As becomes clear in this study, Wellhausen reconstructed the religion of Israel in the framework of its history. Kaufmann, by contrast, proposed that monotheism emerged in Israel as a new creation of the spirit of Israel.
