Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Französische Philologie - Linguistik, Note: 1,0, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Romanistik- Linguistik), Veranstaltung: HS Kreolsprachen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Arbeit mit Kreol- und Pidgin-Sprachen ist faszinierend, da man hier einen Fall von extremem Sprachwandel beobachten kann, der in den meisten Fällen durch außer-sprachliche Faktoren stark beeinflusst wurde, zum Beispiel die Notwendigkeit der Kommunikation zweier Gruppen mit verschiedenen Muttersprachen. Man kann hier beobachten wie sehr Sprachen von ihrer Umwelt beeinflussbar sind. Bei der Arbeit mit Genesetheorien von Pidgin- und Kreolsprachen fällt auf, dass in der Fachliteratur oft die Grenzen zwischen Pidgin- und Kreolgenesetheorien nicht klar dargestellt werden. Diese Arbeit hat sich daher zum Ziel gesetzt, kritisch zu hinterfragen, ob es Sinn macht, eine Trennung zwischen Kreol- und Pidgingenesetheorien durchzuführen. Dieses Thema wurde, wenn überhaupt, nur periphär von Linguisten thematisiert. Man hat beinahe das Gefühl, dass sich fast jeder Kreolistik-Forscher auch zu dem Thema der Kreolgenesetheorien geäußert hat. Leider erscheinen einem diese Beiträge oft wie eine Wiederholung von bereits Gesagtem oder wie ein ständiges Streitgespräch unter Linguisten. Bernd Heine hat mit seinen Untersuchungen über die Pidginsprachen im Bantu-Bereich einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Pidginforschung geleistet.

Like Mühlhäusler argues in his abstract, the history of examining pidgin and creole languages can be seen as a consequence of this view. “Rather they are broken English/French (the popular view), marginal languages (Reineke), ‘Ludersprachen’ (prostitute languages - an expression used by Nazi linguists), parasitic systems (Chomsky).”2Nowadays, this opinion Mühlhäusler criticized is nevertheless disproved and antiquated. TheEncyclopaedia Britannicaonce described Pidgin English as “an unruly bastard jargon, filled with nursery imbecilities, vulgarisms and corruptions”.3But it no longer uses such a definition. Recently, for example scholars recall that pidgins mirror human creative linguistic ability.4 Now this course work should deal with Hawaii Creole English, starting with a short definition of pidgin and creole languages and then turning to some background information about the Hawaiian Islands, which is quite important to understand the context of language developments. Afterwards, Hawaii Creole English5is examined with regard to consonants, vowels, intonation as well as phonology, grammar, semantics and pragmatics. Furthermore, it is compared with Hawaiian, the original language of Hawaii, and Hawaii Pidgin English. As a conclusion, one could summarize the use of studying pidgin and creole language with the help of a few new aspects, and briefly discuss the feature of decreolization in Hawaii, if there is some. The aim of this course work should be to evaluate the sociolinguistic approach of Hawaii with the linguistic facts of HCE, noting also the expansion of the language.

West Africa came into contact with Europeans for the first time in the 15th century. The Britons were - in contrast to the Spanish and Portuguese - latecomers to the African scene, which is why the Nigerian languages did not have been influenced by the English language until the beginning of the colonial period. The unification of Nigeria in 1914 marked the starting point of her colonization. Since that point in time, contact between English and the major Nigerian languages has been increasing. Nigerian Pidgin (NP), which developed as a contact language between English and various indigenous languages, nowadays does no more fit the definition of a Pidgin as a pure contact language, for it is mainly spoken locally and not throughout the whole country. It is neither a creole, because it is not learned natively by children - at least not throughout its whole area of spreading. To give an overview on how English, Nigerian Pidgin, and the three major indigenous languages are currently fighting to gain ground over each other in multilingual Nigeria, is the topic of this paper's first chapter. The role of English in West Africa in general and Nigeria in particular has been examined to a larger extent in the seminar, so here the main focus is laid on NP and the other three major indigenous languages. The second part deals with the altering role of Nigerian Pidgin in terms of literature, interethnic communication, and the mass media. Especially in the Caribbean the British empire had a lot of colonies in the past - one, in fact the biggest one, of these was Jamaica. Being one of the world's many English-speaking countries it is worth studying especially from a linguistic point of view because it is one of the few Caribbean countries in which a standard English and an English-based creole have been employed almost since its colonization. To get a precise picture of what English is like in Jamaica one has to consider the history of the Jamaican languages as well as the present situation. As a standard variety and a creole coexist in Jamaica, one has to look at both of them in isolation and at how they influence each other. Therefore it will not only be of interest to examine the function and some of the linguistic features of Jamaican English and the Jamaican creole but also the post-creole continuum.
