Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Museumswissenschaft, Museologie, Note: 1,7, Freie Universität Berlin (Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ich möchte in der vorliegenden Seminararbeit zwei der Sonderausstellungen zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs untersuchen, nämlich „14 – Menschen – Krieg“ im Militärhistorischen Museum in Dresden sowie „Der gefühlte Krieg. Emotionen im Ersten Weltkrieg“ im Museum Europäischer Kulturen in Berlin. Ich habe mich bewusst für diese beiden unterschiedlichen Häuser entschieden, da es mich interessiert, wie die Kuratoren der beiden Museen mit dem Thema umgegangen sind. Ferner lohnt es sich, Sonderausstellungen im Gegensatz zu Dauerausstellungen zu untersuchen, da diese oft kühner sind. Als „Museen auf Zeit“ weisen sie häufig einen größeren Mut zur These auf, um ihren Botschaften in öffentlichen Debatten Stoff und Richtung geben zu können. Nicht selten bilden Sonderausstellungen Ausgangspunkte für Trends in der musealen Darstellungsweise. Das Thema Krieg erfährt in der heutigen Gesellschaft eine hohe Relevanz und entspricht der gewachsenen Bedeutung des Mediums Museum für die Geschichtsvermittlung. Seit Ende der 1970er Jahre spricht man von einem Museumsboom, der sich an hohen Besucherzahlen ebenso ablesen lässt wie an der Zahl von Museumsneugründungen oder dem wachsenden Interesse der Forschung am Thema. Erinnerung ist in unserer Gegenwart zu einer Art Sucht geworden und das Museum bietet den Raum, diese Sucht zu befriedigen; sowohl als Ort der Erinnerung als auch der Kommunikation. Dabei fällt der musealen Kriegsdarstellung eine besondere Bedeutung zu, ist sie doch ein politisch sensibler Akt, da sie kollektive Selbstbilder gefährden, persönlich Betroffene vor den Kopf stoßen und rechtliche Ansprüche begründen kann. Bei Ausstellungen zum Zweiten Weltkrieg fällt dies deutlicher ins Gewicht als bei Schauen zum Ersten, da dieser weitestgehend historisiert ist. Dies zeigte sich nicht zuletzt bei der Wehrmachtsaustellung.

English summary: The authors of this anthology compare for the first time the meaning of the museums and memorials for the debates surrounding the memory of World War II in Eastern Europe. No other event in the history of Europe has had such a broad influence on the political identity and has become so strongly interwoven with the political history and national interpretations as World War II. Against this background, the authors of this anthology look at selected museums in Eastern Europe and study their role as mediators of memory and the offspring of historical debates. Have they become historical "referees" or are the stagings in museums planned events? At the core of these analyses furthermore lie themes such as victim hierarchies, dealing with the Holocaust and collaboration. German description: Kein anderes Ereignis der Zeitgeschichte hat in Europa eine solche identitatspolitische, sinnstiftende Erinnerungskraft und ist so stark von geschichtspolitischen Konjunkturen und nationalkulturellen Deutungen abhangig wie der Zweite Weltkrieg. Die Erinnerung an den Krieg ist jedoch zwischen Erinnerungskollektiven umkampft, was fur Museen eine Herausforderung ist. Daher stellt sich grundsatzlich die Frage, ob das museale Narrativ das Ergebnis eines gesellschaftlichen Aushandlungsprozesses ist, oder ob es andere, alternative Geschichten ausgrenzt und somit als geschichtspolitischer Schiedsrichter fungieren will. Die Brennpunkte der Debatten betreffen unter anderem die Opferhierarchie, die Thematisierung der (eigenen) Tater und die Integration des Holocaust in die offizielle Kriegserzahlung. Der gesellschaftliche Dissens in Bezug auf diese Fragen fuhrt dazu, dass die musealisierte Geschichte oft von der erinnerten Geschichte abweicht. Der Sammelband analysiert erstmals mit ahnlichen methodischen Zugangen ausgewahlte Museen und Gedenkstatten des ostlichen Europa zum Zweiten Weltkrieg. Dadurch werden nicht nur die erinnerungspolitischen Kontexte in osteuropaischen Staaten, sondern auch der Einfluss der transnationalen Museumspraxis in Bezug auf den Holocaust sichtbar.

Akademische Arbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Zeitalter Weltkriege, Note: 1,3, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bis heute gilt die Darstellung von Krieg im Museum als besonders heikel und problematisch. Zudem bedeutete die Erfahrung von zwei Weltkriegen nicht zuletzt auch eine erhebliche Zäsur im Verständnis der Funktion von musealisierter Kriegsgeschichte, die sich von einem Ort der Heldenverehrung und Kriegsverherrlichung zu einer Institution des Friedens und Opfergedenkens gewandelt hat. Schaut man sich die Darstellung des Ersten Weltkrieges im Museum jedoch genauer an, so lassen sich vor allem zwei Darstellungsformen unterscheiden: einerseits das klassische, ‚stille' Museum, das sich vornehmlich als Bildungsinstitution versteht und reflektierte Distanz wahren möchte, andererseits das interaktive Museum, das mit Hilfe aufwändiger Inszenierungen und der Einbindung audiovisueller Medien den Krieg durch Emotionalisierung ‚erfahrbar‘ zu machen versucht. Beide Museumskonzepte werden hier anhand von zwei konkreten Beispielen vergleichend dargestellt und hinsichtlich ihrer Vorzüge und Nachteile näher untersucht. Darüber hinaus wird jedoch auch auf die grundsätzliche Bedeutung und Funktion eines historischen Museums eingegangen, da die spezifische Problematik eines Kriegsmuseums letztlich vor allem darin besteht, dass dieses sich selbst stets zwischen den teils widersprüchlichen Tendenzen von Politik und Kultur, Ästhetik und Gewalt sowie Emotion und Distanz zu verorten hat.

The Second World War is omnipresent in contemporary memory debates. As the war fades from living memory, this study is the first to systematically analyze how Second World War museums allow prototypical visitors to comprehend and experience the past. It analyzes twelve permanent exhibitions in Europe and North America – including the Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden, the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, the House of European History in Brussels, the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester, and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans – in order to show how museums reflect and shape cultural memory, as well as their cognitive, ethical, emotional, and aesthetic potential and effects. This includes a discussion of representations of events such as the Holocaust and air warfare. In relation to narrative, memory, and experience, the study develops the concept of experientiality (on a sliding scale between mimetic and structural forms), which provides a new textual-spatial method for reading exhibitions and understanding the experiences of historical individuals and collectives. It is supplemented by concepts like transnational memory, empathy, and encouraging critical thinking through difficult knowledge.

Eastern European museums represent traumatic events of World War II, such as the Siege of Leningrad, the Warsaw Uprisings, and the Bombardment of Dresden, in ways that depict the enemy in particular ways. This image results from the interweaving of historical representations, cultural stereotypes and beliefs, political discourses, and the dynamics of exhibition narratives. This book presents a useful methodology for examining museum images and provides a critical analysis of the role historical museums play in the contemporary world. As the catastrophes of World War II still exert an enormous influence on the national identities of Russians, Poles, and Germans, museum exhibits can thus play an important role in this process.
