So z.B. angefangen mit dem Begründer der modernen politischen Geschichtsschreibung, Thukydides, der ein monumentales Werk über den peloponnesischen Krieg und mit dem Melier-Dialog „das berühmteste Beispiel sophistisch legitimer Machtpolitik“ verfasste. Nicht zu vergessen ist der Entwickler einer berühmten Geschichts- und Staatslehre, Augustinus, der sein Augenmerk besonders auf einen bellum iustum legte und als vorrangiges Ziel der Politik die Sicherung des Friedens forderte. Daran knüpft Thomas von Aquin an, der die Monarchie als Staatsform vorzieht, da diese am effektivsten hinsichtlich der Sicherung des Friedens ist. Im weiteren Geschichtsverlauf sticht für die Bedeutung von Krieg und Frieden die Lehre vom politischen Handeln von Niccolò Machiavelli ins Auge. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Lehre steht die Selbsterhaltung und Stabilisierung des Staates. Politik bedeutet für Machiavelli unbedingtes zweckrationales Handeln, folglich ist jedes Mittel, auch Krieg, jeder Zeit zur Sicherung des Staates erlaubt. Schließlich wird am 5. April 1588 in Westport Thomas Hobbes geboren, der sich selbst in seinem weiteren Leben als Begründer der neuzeitlichen politischen Philosophie verstehen sollte. „Das Hauptziel seiner politischen Philosophie liegt, vor dem Hintergrund des englischen Bürgerkrieges, in der Errichtung einer friedvollen und stabilen politischen Ordnung auf der Basis einer individualistischen Vertragstheorie.“ Diese Tatsache spiegelt sich besonders in seinem 1651 erschienen Werk „Leviathan“ wieder, das auch Grundlage dieser Arbeit sein soll und unter dem Thema des Seminars „Krieg und Frieden“ beleuchtet wird. Dabei stellen sich folgende Fragen, die anhand der Hobbesschen Schrift „Leviathan“ unter Einbezug von Sekundärliteratur geklärt werden sollen: - Welcher Kriegsbegriff ist in Hobbes` Leviathan zu finden und welche Konsequenzen hat dieser für den Status des Friedens?
