Allein die schiere Länge des Wettstreits zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und der Union der Sozialistischen Sowjetrepubliken bedingte die Notwendigkeit, beständig Zwischenbilanzen zu ziehen. während der Konflikt anhielt und die Annahme weithin verbreitet war, dass er ein unabänderliches Faktum der Weltlage sei. Ebenso meinten viele, dass etwa auch die Teilung Deutschlands auf unabsehbare Zeit hin eine traurige Konstante bleiben würde. Ein halbes Jahrhundert lang konnten Staatsmänner, Historiker, Politologen, Journalisten und andere allerdings nur mit einem vernebelten Blick den andauernden Kalten Krieg betrachten. Mitten in den Ereignissen zu stecken versperrt oftmals den Blick auf das Wesentliche und verhindert eine messerscharfe Analyse. Es wäre wohl niemand auf die Idee gekommen, im Jahre 1941 ein Buch über den Zweiten Weltkrieg zu verfassen – einfach weil es unsinnig gewesen wäre, nicht das Ende seiner Kämpfe abzuwarten, bevor man seine Geschichte schrieb. Denen, die durch den Nebel des Krieges blicken und sich eine Welt vorstellen konnten, die anders wäre als die bipolar verfeindete, gebührt umso mehr unsere Anerkennung. Allein finden sich in ihren Reihen nur wenig politisch einflussreiche Persönlichkeiten, dafür umso mehr Kunstschaffende, kritische Beobachter und andere Vordenker. Wenn Theologen uns erklären, dass Propheten keine Seher sind, die in die Zukunft sehen, sondern Geister, welche vielmehr die Gegenwart ohne Scheuklappen mit einem Blick wahrnehmen, an dessen Klarheit es ihren Zeitgenossen schrecklich mangelt, dann beschreibt dies die Köpfe, die über den Kalten Krieg hinausdachten, sehr akkurat. Nun ist der Kalte Krieg bereits geraume Zeit vorüber und er ist schlussendlich ein Teil der Vergangenheit geworden, genauso wie viele andere Kriege vor ihm. Meine eigenen, ganz persönlichen Erinnerungen an den Kalten Krieg sind vage und verschwommen, beschränkt auf ein paar Bilder vom Mauerfall. Heute schon stellt in den Schulen – und bald auch in den Universitäten – eine Generation, die den Kalten Krieg überhaupt nicht mehr persönlich erlebt hat, kritisch die Frage nach seiner Relevanz – war außer einem „langen Frieden“ nichts gewesen? Eine Generation, für welche die Namen Truman und Stalin und sogar Reagan und Gorbatschow so entfernt klingen wie Caesar oder Napoleon. [...]

Germany in the 20th century endured two world wars, a failed democracy, Hitler's dictatorship, the Holocaust, and a country divided for 40 years after World War II. But it has also boasted a strong welfare state, affluence, liberalization and globalization, a successful democracy, and the longest period of peace in European history. A History of Twentieth-Century Germany provides a survey of German history during a century of extremes. Ulrich Herbert sees German history in the 20th century as determined by two contradictory perspectives. On one hand, there are the world wars and great catastrophes that divide the country's history into two parts-before and after 1945. Germany is the birthplace of radical ideologies of the left and right and the only country in which each ideology became the foundation of government. This pattern left its stamp on both the first and second halves of the century. On the other hand, the rise of modern industrial society led to decades of conflict over the social and political order regardless of which political system was in force. Ideocracies, or ideological dictatorships, such as the "Third Reich", the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China have, much more than any other kinds of autocracy, characterized the history of the 20th century. In the spring of 1945, Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, President Edvard Benes, and Marshal Josip Broz Tito stood as examples of the complete rupture between the Germans and Austrians on the one hand, and the Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks on the other. The total break that occurred in World War II with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocides (particularly against the Jews and "Gypsies") had a long pre-history, beginning with violent nationalist clashes in the Habsburg Monarchy during the revolutions of 1848/49. Therefore, this monograph - based on a broad range of international primary and secondary sources - explores the development of the political, legal, economic, social, and cultural "communities of conflict" within Austria-Hungary, especially in the Bohemian and South Slavic countries, the making of the Paris Peace Treaties in 1919/20 by violating President Wilson's principle of self-determination, particularly in drawing new borders and creating new economic units, and the perpetuated ethnic-national conflicts between Czechs and Germans, Slovaks and Magyars, Slovenes and Germans, Croats and Serbs as well as Serbs and Germans in the successor states, deepening the differences between the nations of East-Central Europe. The contributors to the present volume approach World War I and World War II as complex and intertwined crossroads leading to the definition of the new European (and world) reality, and deeply pervading the making of the twentieth century. These scholars belong to different yet complementary areas of research – history, literature, cinema, art history; they come from various national realities and discuss questions related to Italy, Britain, Germany, Poland, Spain, at times introducing a comparison between European and North American memories of the two World War experiences. These scholars are all guided by the same principle: to encourage the establishment of an interdisciplinary and trans-national dialogue in order to work out new approaches capable of integrating and acknowledging different or even opposing ways to perceive and interpret the same historical phenomenon. While assessing the way the memories of the two World Wars have been readjusted each time in relation to the evolving international historical setting and through various mediators of memory (cinema, literature, art and monuments), the various essays contribute to unveil a cultural panorama inhabited by contrasting memories and by divided memories not to emphasise divisions, but to acknowledge the ethical need for a truly shared act of reconciliation.
