Thorsminde, eller Æ Mind, som byen bliver kaldt lokalt, opstod i forbindelse med nogle forgæves forsøg på afvanding af Nissum Fjord sidst i 1800tallet, hvor der blev bygget en sluse, der skulle kunne regulere vandstanden i fjorden. I 1930 udbyggedes den med en vejbane og en kammersluse, så fiskerbådene i den lille havn på fjordsiden kunne komme ud på havet. I den forbindelse voksede byen med nye indbyggere, som stort set alle var afhængige af fiskeriet. Efterhånden blev det hæmmende for udviklingen i Thorsminde, at havnen lå på østsiden af slusen, hvilket satte begrænsninger på kutternes størrelse. I 1967 lykkedes det endelig at få en ny havn på vestsiden af slusen taget i brug. Herefter fik fiskeriet rigtig gode tider, indtil min historie slutter i 1980erne. En stor del af Thorsmindes historie er redningsvæsenet og de farer, en redningsaktion kan medføre.
