Kuchipudi, from Andhra Pradesh, was originally a dance-drama form. This is a first attempt to demystify the nuances of a form that has always been the preserve of the males. The dramatic content of the form was passed from one generation to the other without a written script. It was only in the last century that pure dance sequences have been culled out to evolve a style that is distinct from the dance-drama form of the same generic name. This book attempts to decode the fine nuances of this vigourous and energetic form where the tandava and the lasya are entwined in an inseparable dance of the ardhnarishwar.

Impersonations: The Artifice of Brahmin Masculinity in South Indian Dance centers on an insular community of Smarta Brahmin men from the Kuchipudi village in Telugu-speaking South India who are required to don stri-vesam (woman’s guise) and impersonate female characters from Hindu religious narratives. Impersonation is not simply a gender performance circumscribed to the Kuchipudi stage, but a practice of power that enables the construction of hegemonic Brahmin masculinity in everyday village life. However, the power of the Brahmin male body in stri-vesam is highly contingent, particularly on account of the expansion of Kuchipudi in the latter half of the twentieth century from a localized village performance to a transnational Indian dance form. This book analyzes the practice of impersonation across a series of boundaries—village to urban, Brahmin to non-Brahmin, hegemonic to non-normative—to explore the artifice of Brahmin masculinity in contemporary South Indian dance.

Revisiting The Classical A Critical History Of Kuchipudi Dance written by Rumya Sree Putcha and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with categories.

Throughout the dissertation, I analyze the representation, discourse and practice of Kuchipudi over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and focus on the ways in which the dance practice has come to represent Telugu identity within the larger context of a globalizing Indian modernity. This focus extends previous studies of Indian classical dance by sustaining questions about the reification of the Kuchipudi dancing body, the implications that this has regarding the fate of hereditary courtesan dancers, and the discursive strategies that allow Brahmin male history and female dance practice to coalesce.

Koochipoodi enjoys prominence as one of India s major classicaldance styles. The process of its evolution from a group traditionto the solo form has been marked by significant events, someof which took place around the period of India s Independence.Koochipoodi s journey into the 21st century makes for afascinating study. This book closely follows the journey andlooks at the inter-relationship between Koochipoodi and its coexistenttraditions.Through her well-researched work, the author seeks to familiarizethe reader with various features of Koochipoodi while providingadditional information about little known aspects of this tradition. She examines the nature of various contributions made to it asalso its adaptation to individual artistic expression. Rather thanpresent a compilation of specific details about the several giftedKoochipoodi exponents down the generations, she describes theblossoming of this form in their hands.A number of photographers have been involved with thepreparation of much of the pictorial material featured in thisbook. Around 200 sumptuous photographs (173 in colour and21 in black and white) have been included, most of which willbe seen for the first time in a book. One more innovative anduseful feature is the mention of the period or dates on which thephotographs have been taken. This adds interest to the book.It is significant that one of the luminaries of Koochipoodi dancemakes here debut as an author with this publication. The world of Koochipoodi Dance is perhaps one of the firstbooks of this kind by a leading dancer on this subject.
