Excerpt from Kultur und Presse Mit der vorliegenden Schrift wird der Versuch einer systematischen und kritischen Darstellung des modernen Zeitungswesens unternommen. Die Zeitungskunde, die bis her meist nur historisch oder nebenher im Gefolge anderer wissenschaftlicher Betriebe abgehandelt wurde, soll hier als eigenberechtigte Disziplin in ihren Grundzugen entwickelt werden. Innerhalb dieses weiteren Rahmens der gesetzten Aufgabe war der Verfasser vorzuglich bemuht, die Stellung der Presse im Kulturleben der Gegenwart zu bestimmen und die zahllosen Ausstrahlungen ihrer Wirksamkeit zu ver folgen; dieser engeren und wichtigsten Absicht des Werkes wurde dessen Titel entnommen. Der Verfasser darf nicht hoffen, mehr als einen Versuch zu bieten; dafs aber dieser Versuch gewagt wurde, bedarf kaum einer Rechtfertigung. Insbesondere sollte die parteimal'sige, oft pamphletistische Behandlung, die dem neuzeitlichen Prefswesen vielfach zuteil wird und bei welcher gerade seine wichtigsten Seiten aufser acht bleiben, durch eine abstrakte, der Tendenz entruckte und leidenschaftslose Betrachtung ersetzt werden. Ob die Zeitungskunde den Rang einer Wissenschaft heansmuchen darf, ist strittig; sicherlich aber ist gegenuber einem Kulturphanomen von der Bedeutung der modernen Pressewenigstens eine wissenschaftliche Betrachtungsweise geboten, welche die objektive Feststellung von Tatsachen und Zu sammenhangen anstrebt. In diesem Sinne ist der Verfasser an seine Aufgabe herangetreten, in diesem Sinne moge die hier versuchte Losung beurteilt werden. Kulturjournalismus in der Presse befindet sich inmitten eines Wandlungsprozesses. Der verschärfte Konkurrenzkampf der Medien, neue Lesegewohnheiten und auch Veränderungen dessen, was als Kultur gilt, zwingen Verlage und Redakteure zum Umdenken. Ein 'Feuilleton für alle' mag als Ziel unerreichbar sein, als Programm können immer weniger Zeitungen und Zeitschriften darauf verzichten. Die Leitfrage lautet: Wie kann Kulturjournalismus sowohl möglichst vielen Leserinnen und Lesern als auch der Kultur als seinem Gegenstand gerecht werden, und wo werden welche Problemlösungen praktiziert? Die Studie sucht Antworten auf empirischem Weg. Ausgewählt wurden 19 Zeitungen und Zeitschriften in Deutschland. Das Sample bilden nicht nur Beiträge in Kulturteilen, sondern auch kulturbezogene Texte auf Seiten anderer Ressorts. Methodisch zentral ist zum einen der Strategiebegriff auf handlungstheoretischer Basis, zum anderen die Integration von quantitativen und qualitativen Analyseverfahren. Erstes Ergebnis ist die Beschreibung des in der journalistischen Praxis wirksamen Kulturbegriffs. Auf dieser Grundlage werden umfassende Befunde der quantitativen Analyse vorgestellt: Umfang und Gewicht von Kulturbeiträgen in den Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, thematische Struktur (Umfang und Gewicht von Kultursparten wie Musik und ihren Subsparten wie Klassik oder Pop, von Themenfeldern wie Kulturereignis oder Kulturproduzent und Ereignistypen wie Konzert oder Geburtstag), formale Struktur (Layout) und funktionale Struktur der Berichterstattung (Beitragsformen wie Rezension oder Meldung und Funktionstypen wie Kritik oder Service). In einem zweiten Hauptteil der Studie werden die Ergebnisse des ersten Teils ergänzt und vertieft durch die Analyse der journalistischen Strategien des Popularisierens, Personalisierens und Feuilletonisierens. Sichtbar werden jeweils spezifische Profile der unterschiedlichen Pressetypen und einzelner Organe.
