Zasadniczym celem niniejszej publikacji nie jest budowanie teorii egodokumentów, roztrząsanie stopnia estetyzacji tego typu wypowiedzi czy wyjaśnianie związanych z tym zawiłości metodologicznych. Bardziej interesuje nas pytanie, na ile omawiane formy wypowiedzi autobiograficznej mogą być pomocne w badaniach antropologicznych, zwłaszcza w jej nurcie historycznym i etnograficznym. Książka została bowiem pomyślana jako rodzaj monografii próbującej wyłuskać z egodokumentów wyrastający z nich obraz kultury wsi, a w zasadzie wiele obrazów, gdyż trudno mówić o jednej spójnej wizji świata, jeśli rozważania oparto na różnorodnych materiałach co do czasu ich powstania (od XVIII do XXI wieku) oraz tworzących je podmiotów. Mamy zarówno spojrzenie elit – szlachty, księży, zakonnic, regionalistów, jak i – w większości przypadków – autoprezentację przedstawicieli warstw chłopskich. Z tej perspektywy egodokumenty, z całym swoim subiektywizmem, wybiórczością podejmowanych tematów i różnorodnością motywacji ich spisania, pozwalają rekonstruować nieoficjalne oblicza danej kultury; w wypadku niniejszego tomu – obrazu kultury wsi.
