In this volume on the history of the European nobility in the modern era, the boundary between the early modern and 'real' modern periods around 1800 is deliberately crossed. By centring on the nobility, the authors undertake a new exploration of the continuities and ruptures in European history. In the three thematic areas of law, politics and aesthetics, the noble knights' utilisation of the early modern courts in the Holy Roman Empire is considered, along with the social and political identity of the English nobility in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1971, the International Congress for Neo-Latin Studies has been organised every three years in various cities in Europe and North America. In August 2012, Münster in Germany was the venue of the fifteenth Neo-Latin conference, held by the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies. The proceedings of the Münster conference have been collected in this volume under the motto „ Litterae neolatinae, sedes et quasi domicilia rerum religiosarum et politicarum – Religion and Politics in Neo-Latin Literature”. It aims both to interrogate the notion of 'early modernity' itself and to survey early modern Europe as an established field of study. Volume I examines 'Peoples and Place', assessing structural factors such as climate, printing and the revolution in information, social and economic developments, and religion, including chapters on Orthodoxy, Judaism and Islam.

Gelehrte der reformierten Universitat Heidelberg und der jesuitisch dominierten Universitat Mainz tauschten zwischen 1583 und 1622 zahlreiche Kontroversschriften aus. In diesen Schriften befassten sich die Autoren mit zahlreichen Themenfeldern der Theologie und daruber hinaus. So wurden historiographische, juristisch-staatswissenschaftliche, philologische und auch astronomisch-mathematische Fragen ebenfalls zur konfessionellen Streitsache erhoben. Diese Konkurrenzsituation bewirkte zwar die Teilung der gelehrten Welt, regte jedoch zugleich die wissenschaftliche Betatigung an. Die Kontrahenten lasen die Schriften der Gegenseite aufmerksam und versuchten, diese in zahlreichen Publikationen zu widerlegen. Die Kontroversschriften wurden so unbeabsichtigt zu einer interkonfessionellen Verbindungsstelle der gelehrten Welt, an der sich einige Transferprozesse nachweisen lassen.
