Die Suche nach der Wahrheit, das Wissen um die Zukunft, die Lösung der Rätsel der Vergangenheit, die Beantwortung von brennenden Fragen – all das versprachen Orakel schon in der Antike. Das Aufkommen des Christentums bedeutete zwar einen Einschnitt, doch blühten die Wahrsagekünste, partiell nach antikem Vorbild in christianisierter Form weiter, aber auch genuin mittelalterliche Methoden bildeten sich heraus. Die von der Kirche nur widerwillig geduldeten geheimwissenschaftlichen Traktate, die sich mit Orakeltechniken befassten, waren immer wieder Verboten ausgesetzt, da die Theologen den Schicksalsglauben einerseits und die Beeinflussung der Wirklichkeit mit Hilfe der Magie andererseits als Ketzerei und Teufelsdienst verurteilten. Die widersprüchlichen Haltungen der Zeitzeugen beweisen, dass man nicht so einfach zwischen Gegnern und Anhängern der Wahrsagemethoden zu unterscheiden vermag, da die Widersprüche offenbar in den Personen selbst ausgetragen wurden. Dieses Buch bietet einen umfassenden kulturwissenschaftlichen Überblick aller mittelalterlichen Formen der Wahrsagerei und erweitert die bisherige Forschung um eine Perspektivierung der Rezeptions-, Diskurs- und Kontextgeschichte, ergänzt um einen Rückblick auf die Antike.

Two opposing views of the future in the Middle Ages dominate recent historical scholarship. According to one opinion, medieval societies were expecting the near end of the world and therefore had no concept of the future. According to the other opinion, the expectation of the near end created a drive to change the world for the better and thus for innovation. Close inspection of the history of prognostication reveals the continuous attempts and multifold methods to recognize and interpret God’s will, the prodigies of nature, and the patterns of time. That proves, on the one hand, the constant human uncertainty facing the contingencies of the future. On the other hand, it demonstrates the firm believe during the Middle Ages in a future which could be shaped and even manipulated. The handbook provides the first overview of current historical research on medieval prognostication. The notions of other peoples, cultures, and natural conditions have always been determined by the epistemology of imagination and fantasy, providing much freedom and creativity, and yet have also created much fear, anxiety, and horror. In this regard, the pre-modern world demonstrates striking parallels with our own insofar as the projections of alterity might be different by degrees, but they are fundamentally the same by content. Dreams, illusions, projections, concepts, hopes, utopias/dystopias, desires, and emotional attachments are as specific and impactful as the physical environment. This volume thus sheds important light on the various lenses used by people in the Middle Ages and the early modern age as to how they came to terms with their perceptions, images, and notions. Previous scholarship focused heavily on the history of mentality and history of emotions, whereas here the history of pre-modern imagination, and fantasy assumes center position. Imaginary things are taken seriously because medieval and early modern writers and artists clearly reveal their great significance in their works and their daily lives. This approach facilitates a new deep-structure analysis of pre-modern culture.

This volume is a collection based on the contributions to witchcraft studies of Willem de Blécourt, to whom it is dedicated, and who provides the opening chapter, setting out a methodological and conceptual agenda for the study of cultures of witchcraft (broadly defined) in Europe since the Middle Ages. It includes contributions from historians, anthropologists, literary scholars and folklorists who have collaborated closely with De Blécourt. Essays pick up some or all of the themes and approaches he pioneered, and apply them to cases which range in time and space across all the main regions of Europe since the thirteenth century until the present day.
