Museen, Bibliotheken und Archive sind aufgefordert, neben der Erfassung von Bestandsverlusten auch ihre Sammlungen auf Bestände von unrechtmäßig entzogenem Kulturgut zu überprüfen. Die Publikation gibt die Inhalte einer Tagung wieder, die die Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern und die Koordinierungsstelle für Kulturgutverluste in Magdeburg in Zusammenarbeit mit den Museen der Stadt Nürnberg im Frühjahr 2005 in Nürnberg durchführten. Fachleute aus Archiv-, Bibliotheks- und Museumswesen widmen sich darin vorwiegend in Erfahrungsberichten aus dem bayerischen Raum den geschichtlichen Abläufen ebenso wie der Frage nach Möglichkeiten und Wegen der Provenienzforschung. Der Bogen spannt sich von der Geschichte des Central Collecting Point in München über Archivbestände, welche die Provenienzforschung erleichtern, bis hin zu dem Umgang mit der sogenannten 'Streicher-Bibliothek' in Nürnberg oder der Provenienzrecherche an den Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen. Daneben präsentiert sich die Koordinierungsstelle für Kulturgutverluste in Magdeburg als Anlaufstelle für Ratsuchende, betroffene Einrichtungen und Provenienzforscher.

Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges kämpfte die Familie Ullstein um die Rückgabe ihres 1934 an die NSDAP zwangsverkauften Verlags. Doch die Amerikaner brauchten das Druckhaus des Unternehmens in Berlin-Tempelhof für ihre Reeducation-Politik und verzögerten jahrelang die Restitution – genau wie der Berliner Senat, der mit dem Wiederaufleben des legendären Hauses Ullstein einen Zeitungskrieg in West-Berlin befürchtete. Als die Ullsteins 1952 ihren Verlag aus der Treuhänderschaft zurückerhielten, war er überschuldet, sein Maschinenpark veraltet – und man versuchte, ihm die lebenswichtigen Zeitungslizenzen vorzuenthalten. Aufgrund dieser mannigfaltig belasteten Ausgangssituation erscheint das wirtschaftliche Versagen der wiedererstandenen Ullstein AG am Ende der 1950er Jahre in einem anderen Licht. Das Unrecht, das den Ullsteins unter dem NS-Regime widerfahren war, wirkte nach dem Untergang fort – und erhielt durch die bewusst verzögerte Restitution neue und verstörende Facetten.

With the help of the US Army’s Monuments Men—the name given to a hand-picked group of art historians and museum professionals commissioned for this important duty—massive numbers of objects were retrieved from their wartime hiding places and inventoried for repatriation. Iris Lauterbach’s fascinating history documents the story of the Allies’ Central Collecting Point (CCP), set up in the former Nazi Party headquarters at Königsplatz in Munich, where the confiscated works were transported to be identified and sorted for restitution.
