Something was in the air. A film manifesto penned by passionate cinephiles called for a new cinema. An exciting generation of iconoclastic filmmakers were on the march, the first to graduate from the newly incarnated Film and Television Institute of India, seizing the moment to forge one of the first major post-colonial film movements. What emerged was an unprecedented level of creativity, merging international influences with experimental, indigenous styles, and creating an aesthetic and thematic rupture, and that ultimately led to new ways of making films. But it is a story that has rarely been told, inextricably absent from the parochial, Euro-centric and linear histories of film. This is the story of Indian Parallel Cinema. From auteurs like Mani Kaul and John Abraham to Smita Patil and Om Puri, The Revolution of Indian Parallel Cinema in the Global South explores the origins, evolution, demise and legacy of a film movement that produced a pantheon of innovative filmmakers, in excess of two hundred films and a distinctly regional identity in which film societies, state funding and political insurgency were catalysts for a defiant, radical dialogue, much of it anti-establishment, that broke all the rules. Most importantly, this publication considers the ways in which Parallel Cinema narrated a new 'history from below', using a range of case studies that includes Uski Roti, Mirch Masala and Amma Ariyan.

The contents of this book represent a series of experiments in dramatizing Bion's A Memoir of the Future, the primary one being an unfinished film begun in India in the 1980s and directed by Kumar Shahani, 'epic' artfilm maker, most of whose films have been produced in Hindi. The film was inspired and initiated by Bombay psychoanalyst Udayan Patel, and sponsored by the Roland Harris Educational Trust. The cast of actors included Jalal Agha, Tom Alter, Robert Burbage, Nicholas Clay, Neil Cunningham, Carol Drinkwater, Peter Firth, Nigel Hawthorne, Shona Morris, Jonathan Page (as a child), Angela Pleasence, Juliet Reynolds, and Alaknanda Samarth.The filmscript and a commentary are here included, together with a narrative poem written for Alaknanda Samarth who played the Ayah of Bion's childhood, and a playscript written for Tom Alter who played the Father. The play is due to be first performed in Bombay and Delhi in February 2016.An appendix reprints a psychoanalytic study of the Memoir by Donald Meltzer, who was closely involved in the production of the original film.The book is illustrated by screenshots from the film and the ebook contains video extracts.

The Indian National Emergency of 1975 to 1977, saw the suspension of civil liberties, increasing censorship, and extra-judicial state control. It is recognised as one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of postcolonial India, and its socio-political consequences have been exhaustively studied. Despite this, the profound cinematic implications of this event have remained relatively unexplored. This book examines the strained relationship between the state and the Indian film industry during this 21 month period of political upheaval. Each of the essays, written from a broad range of critical perspectives, consider the various modes of state suppression adopted, from increasing levels of film censorship to police surveillance of film productions and exhibitions. Contributors analyse controversial films such as Aandhi (1975) and Nasbandi (1978), which were banned for the duration of the Emergency, and overtly political films such as Kissa Kursi Ka (1977), the prints of which were permanently confiscated owing to the film's criticisms of the state. They also consider the political and aesthetic dilemmas of state-sponsored films such as Ashadh Ka Ek Din (1971), which was made to be explicitly apolitical and came to be known as a key work of New Indian Cinema.

The book explores the encounter of the self with situations of crisis from diverse disciplinary and cultural perspectives from antiquity to contemporary times. A crisis is at once a historically situated phenomenon and a recurring idea of endangerment or a breakdown in creaturely living. By making our choices stark and difficult, crisis opens up the possibility for genuinely fresh and unexpected beginnings. At the most fundamental level, crisis is the disintegration of relationality among creatures. In fact, crisis is a battle of attrition with and within selfhood. It has the potential to turn into a norm in everyday interaction. It then stops being an exception and becomes the very condition of our living. Through the rubrics of the assured and the restive, the volume addresses how selfhood encounters and negotiates concentric circles of crisis in life and literature. Does the idea of crisis allow us to formulate the idea of self in a particular way? How do certain sources and resources within the self – stoic or heroic, political and creative – come into being during crisis? While some essays delve into questions of repose and sensuality by highlighting specific cases and trajectories from the subcontinent, others deal with questions of mythology, politics and art in a wider sense. One essay directly addresses the core literary question of the uncanny and its relation to selfhood. While specific concerns illuminate each essay, the volume speaks with a collective, global sense of crisis that faces humanity now and tentatively offers some prospects to deal with it.

Popular Hindi cinema has become a significant signpost of contemporaneity due to its construction of social language. Generally, Hindi cinema has been understood through internal (auteur or genre or cinéma verité) and external aspects (consumption spheres and moviegoers’ complex response in the form of catharsis or everydayness mimesis). However, cinema also needs a new way of discerning with respect to ‘Dalit Representation’. The study needs to look at the construction and meaning of the social language of Hindi cinema. Construction refers to exploring factors beyond the film industry responsible for shaping the social language. Meaning entails the exhibition of social language in the form of messages. Herein, relational exploration becomes crucial. The relationship between factors of social language of Hindi cinema and Dalits must be unraveled for understanding the meaning of social language for Dalits. Contested representation encompasses the nature of absence and presence of Dalits in Hindi cinema.
