Der Liebhaber der klassischen Musik hat die Qual der Wahl. Es existieren allein im deutschsprachigen Raum viele Komponisten, und bezogen auf die Qualität schnalzt der Experte mit der Zunge, wenn er Namen wie Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven und Richard Wagner in einem Atemzug nennen kann. Doch diesen Richard Wagner wird in Reihen der großen deutschen Literaten neben Goethe, Schiller, Thomas Mann und Günther Grass der Experte weniger in den Mund nehmen, wenngleich Wagner das anders gesehen hätte. Wagner also sieht sich ebenso als Dichter wie als Musiker. Deutlich gemacht hat er das mit seiner 1851 entstandenen theoretischen Schrift „Oper und Drama“, von der auch diese Arbeit handeln soll. Was ist dran an diesem Mann, dass er sich derartig äußern kann? Zumindest in der Musikund Kulturforschung wird sein theoretisch-philosophisches Wirken der Zürcher Exilzeit häufig unbeachtet gelassen. Und doch formulierte Wagner Thesen, die die Kulturwissenschaften der Musik und Dichtung mit stärker aufgebrachtem Ernst der Leser total über den Haufen hätte werfen können und dies in Ansätzen auch getan hat. Denn Wagner hat mit Kritik an der Kunst und den Künstlern seiner Zeit nicht gespart und vor allem die Gattung der Oper reformieren wollen. „Der Irrtum in dem Kunstgenre der Oper bestand darin, daß ein Mittel des Ausdruckes (die Musik) zum Zwecke, der Zweck des Ausdruckes (das Drama) aber zum Mittel gemacht war“, formulierte er in der Einleitung zu „Oper und Drama“2 den Missstand dieser Gattung. Doch was will Wagner eigentlich mit dieser Schrift? Sind seine Aussagen zur Kunst – Musik wie Dichtung – haltbar, und was soll am Ende dabei herauskommen? Schließlich stellt sich auch überdeutlich die Frage, ob Wagner sich selbst an seine Reformforderungen gehalten hat? Diesen Fragen will diese Arbeit nachspüren. Zum besseren Verständnis Wagners sollen im folgenden Kapitel seine Aussagen und Thesen zu Oper, Drama und Kunstschaffen seiner Zeit erklärt werden. Daran anschließend wird Kapitel 3 einen Einblick in die Rezeption Wagners geben, um die Haltbarkeit seiner Ausführungen beurteilen zu können. In his Bellum Catilinae, C. Sallustius Crispus or Sallust (86-35/34 B.C.) recounts the dramatic events of 63 B.C., when a disgruntled and impoverished nobleman, L. Sergius Catilina, turned to armed revolution after two electoral defeats. Among his followers were a group of heavily indebted young aristocrats, the Roman poor, and a military force in the north of Italy. With his trademark archaizing style, Sallust skillfully captures the drama of the times, including an early morning attempt to assassinate the consul Cicero and two emotionally charged speeches, by Julius Caesar and Cato the Younger, in a senatorial debate over the fate of the arrested conspirators. The Bellum Catilinae is well-suited for second-year or advanced Latin study and provides a fitting introduction to the richness of Latin literature, while also pointing the way to a critical investigation of late-Republican government and historiography. First Published in 1976 The Reformers of Egypt deals with the views of three major leaders of the Reform School in Egypt - Jamal Al-Din Al-Afghani, Muhammad ’ Abduh and Rashid Ridha. The first was the Socrates of the movement. He wrote little but inspired a great deal. It is difficult to be certain, with regard to the early contributions of ’Abduh, what emanated from Al-Afghani and what’s exclusively ’Abduh’s. The relationship between ’Abduh and Ridha is even more complex, especially when it is realized that Ridha sometimes read into ’Abduh’s thought what was entirely his own. This book is a must read for scholars of Islam, Religion and Egyptian history.
