Komunikasi adalah pertukaran pesan verbal maupun nonverbal antara si pengirim dengan si penerima pesan untuk mengubah tingkah laku (Purwanti, 2019). Komunikasi adalah proses interaksi interaksi antar pribadi manusia atau proses penyampaian informasi dengan menggunakan bentuk verbal maupun non verbal untuk mencapai tujuan tertentu (Pratiwi & Sukma, 2013). Menurut Enjang (2009) Komunikasi merupakan interaksi antar pribadi yang menggunakan sistem simbol linguistik, seperti simbol verbal (kata-kata), non verbal. Sistem ini dapat diasosiasikan secara langsung atau tatap muka atau melalui media lain seperti : tulisan, oral, dan visual. Menurut Candrasari(2016) Komunikasi merupakan setiap proses pertukaran informasi, gagasan dan perasaan. Proses ini meliputi informasi yang disampaikan baik secara lisan maupun tertulis, bahasa tubuh, gaya maupun penampilan diri, menggunakan alat bantu disekeliling kita sehingga pesan menjadi lebih kaya.

Periode neonatal adalah periode 28 hari pertama setelah bayi dilahirkan, selama periode ini bayi harus menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungan ekstra uteri. Anak mengalami tumbuh dan berkembang tidak hanya di mulai dari masa neonatus, namun sejak dalam kandungan. Selain itu, neonatus adalah individu yang sedang bertumbuh. Adaptasi neonatus adalah proses penyesuaian fungsional neonatus dari kehidupan di dalam uterus. Fisiologi neonatus merupakan ilmu yang mempelajari fungsi dan proses vital neonatus. Kemampuan adaptasi fungsional neonatus dari kehidupan di dalam uterus ke kehidupan di luar uterus. Kemampuan adaptasi fisiologis ini disebut juga homeostasis. Bila terdapat gangguan adaptasi, maka bayi akan sakit. Banyak perubahan yang akan dialami oleh bayi yang semula berada dalam lingkungan interna (dalam kandungan ibu) yang hangat dan segala kebutuhannya terpenuhi (Oksigen dan nutrisi) ke lingkungan eksterna (diluar kandungan ibu) yang dingin dan segala kebutuhannya memerlukan bantuan orang lain untuk memenuhinya.

Masa nifasatau masa puerperium adalah masa setelah persalinan selesai sampai 6 minggu atau 42 hari. Perubahan fisiologis yang luar biasa terjadi selama kehamilan sehingga tidak mengherankan bila periode penyesuaian fisiologis dan pemulihan setelah akhir kehamilan merupakan hal yang kompleks dan berkaitan erat dengan status kesehatan individu secara keseluruhan.Penatalaksanaan asuhan pascapartum pada wanita di negara maju memiliki kebutuhan kesehatan yang berbeda dengan negara dengan sumber yang terbatas.Oleh karena itu, gambaran kesehatan masyarakat tampaknya berkaitan langsung dengan peran dan tanggung jawab bidan terhadap ibu pascapartum dan bayi mereka yang baru lahir.Ketika sumber kesehatan yang tersedia hanya sedikit, hal yang lebih penting adalah memberikan perawatan yang tepat kepada ibu sebagai individu daripada mengikuti pola perawatan yang didasarkan pada tugas atau prosedur rutin. Tujuan dari pemberian asuhan pada masa nifas (Septianti et al., 2018): Menjaga kesehatan ibu dan bayinya, baik fisik maupun psikologis. Melaksanakan skriningsecara komprehensif, deteksi dini, mengobati atau merujuk bila terjadi komplikasi pada ibu maupun bayi. Memberikan pendidikan kesehatantentang perawatan kesehatan diri, nutrisi, KB, cara dan manfaat menyusui, pemberian imunisasi serta perawatan bayi sehari-hari. Memberikan pelayanan keluarga berencana.
