Die AutorInnen aus Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Kultur und Medien werden darüber nachdenken, was moderne Gesellschaften prägt und verändert, was sie antreibt und hemmt, was sie befreit und behindert. "Krisen lieben" ist so also nicht nur Titel dieses Kursbuchs 170, sondern auch zentrale Diskussionshypothese des Kursbuchs selbst. Jasmin Siri argumentiert, dass die Krise für politische Parteien ein Demokratiegenerator sei, Florian Rötzner skizziert das Zusammenspiel von Medienkrise und Krisenmedien und Gunter Dueck widerspricht gar dem Titel des Kursbuchs und konstatiert: "Ich hasse Krisen."

As the European Union seemingly teetered from a financial crisis to an immigration crisis around 2015 and onwards, discourses of race appeared to congeal in various member states. In some instances, these came with familiarly essentialist constructions; in others these were refracted cautiously through concerns about security, national and cultural integrity, distribution of public resources and employment, and so on. New political alignments surfaced on the back of such concerns, and established organizations changed their agendas accordingly. The border regimes of EU member states became increasingly fraught, both in terms of their everyday operations and in terms of the close attention and vociferous debates they attracted. In most instances, the internal and external borders of the EU hardened, and with increasing frequency the cohesion of the transnational union seemed on the verge of fracturing. Indeed, very real fissures opened up with secessionist moves and referendums. Through each step in this juncture of upheavals, the significance of race has been reiterated in tangential ways and sometimes with unabashed straightforwardness. This volume explores this juncture around 2015, and the constructions of race and of crisis therein, for specific contexts and from a range of disciplinary perspectives. The introduction gives an overview of the juncture, focusing on the rise of Eurosceptic nationalist political parties and their electoral success. Subsequent chapters are addressed to the management and representation of immigrants crossing the Mediterranean, border regimes in the Czech Republic, the narratives that converged on Brexit, riots in England, antagonistic popular movements in Sweden, racialization in crisis management in Italy, perceptions of migrants in Greece, and how race may be structured in and challenged through classroom pedagogy. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

This book suggests that linguistic translation is one minute province of an immense process of creative activity that constitutes the world as an ongoing dynamism of unceasing transformation. Building upon the speculative quantum gravity theory, which provides a narrative of the push-pull dynamics of transformative translation from the very smallest scales of reality to the very greatest, this book argues that the so-called translative turn of the 1990s was correct in positing translation as a paradigmatic concept of transformation. More radically, the book stages a provocative provincialization of linguistic translation, so that literary translation in particular is shown to display a remarkable awareness of its own participation in a larger creative contact zone. As a result, the German language, literary translations in and out of German, and the German-language classroom, can be understood respectively as quantum contact zones. Russell West-Pavlov is Professor of Anglophone Literatures at the University of Tübingen and Research Associate at the University of Pretoria.

In der Tat, vieles wird weniger: Erdgas, Strom oder das gesamte Wirtschaftswachstum. Einiges steigt aber gleichzeitig: Preise, Löhne, globale Klimazerstörung, Krieg und Inflation. Das Kursbuch beschäftigt sich deshalb mit dem Phänomen der Knappheit. Jetzt, wo es vielerorts knapp wird. Die Lage in diesem Winter macht klar, von wie vielen kontrollierbaren und nicht kontrollierbaren Parametern die Versorgung mit knappen Gütern, aber auch knappen Lösungskonstellationen abhängig ist. Wie knapp all das gebaut ist, war bereits eine Erfahrung in der Pandemie, die gezeigt hat, wie vernetzt eine komplexe Gesellschaft ist und wie stark es zu Rückkopplungen kommt. Dass kleine Störungen an einer Stelle große Wirkungen an anderen entfalten – im Geflecht von Familie, Arbeitsplatz, Wegstrecken und Gesundheitsversorgung –, hat darauf aufmerksam gemacht, wie knapp die Spielräume auch (oder vielleicht gerade) in einer Überflussgesellschaft kalkuliert sind. So erklärt der Wirtschafts- und Sozialhistoriker Werner Plumpe, warum die Steuerungskapazitäten oft nicht ausreichen, das Wirtschaftsgeschehen zu kontrollieren. Mathias Frisch wiederum zeigt, warum manche Klimamessungen eher in die Irre führen und wie wir innerhalb der planetaren Grenzen Klimapolitik betreiben können. Der Psychologe Marc Wittmann zeigt den Umgang des Menschen, wenn seine Zeit knapp wird. Feinste Essayistikkunst findet man auch bei Herausgeber Armin Nassehi in seinem soziologischen Streifzug durch eine knapp kalkulierte Welt. Literary works play a crucial role in modelling and conceptualising temporalities. This becomes particularly apparent in times of crises, which put conventionalised temporal patterns and routines under pressure. During crises, past, present, and future appear to collapse into each other and give way to temporal disjunction and rupture. Using previously classified documents and original interviews, The Other Alliance examines the channels of cooperation between American and West German student movements throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, and the reactions these relationships provoked from the U.S. government. Revising the standard narratives of American and West German social mobilization, Martin Klimke demonstrates the strong transnational connections between New Left groups on both sides of the Atlantic. Klimke shows that the cold war partnership of the American and German governments was mirrored by a coalition of rebelling counterelites, whose common political origins and opposition to the Vietnam War played a vital role in generating dissent in the United States and Europe. American protest techniques such as the "sit-in" or "teach-in" became crucial components of the main organization driving student activism in West Germany--the German Socialist Student League--and motivated American and German student activists to construct networks against global imperialism. Klimke traces the impact that Black Power and Germany's unresolved National Socialist past had on the German student movement; he investigates how U.S. government agencies, such as the State Department's Interagency Youth Committee, advised American policymakers on confrontations with student unrest abroad; and he highlights the challenges student protesters posed to cold war alliances. Exploring the catalysts of cross-pollination between student protest movements on two continents, The Other Alliance is a pioneering work of transnational history.
