"Operation Desert Storm: The U.S.-led Coalition to Liberate Kuwait from Iraqi Occupation" is a detailed and comprehensive account of one of the late 20th century's most significant military campaigns. This book offers a deep dive into the strategic, political, and military aspects of the 1991 Gulf War, focusing on the United States-led coalition's efforts to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The narrative begins by setting the geopolitical stage, explaining the events leading up to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and the international response that followed. The book outlines the diplomatic efforts at the United Nations and other international forums, setting the context for the subsequent military action. Each chapter meticulously examines different components of Operation Desert Storm. This includes the coalition-building process, where the author analyzes how the United States led the formation of a diverse alliance of nations united against Iraq's aggression. The book also explores the planning and execution of the military campaign, detailing the air and ground strategies, the innovative use of technology, and the logistical challenges of such a large-scale operation. A key focus of the book is the operational tactics employed by coalition forces. It looks at the air campaign's impact on crippling Iraqi military capabilities and the swift ground offensive that followed. The author also pays attention to the role of intelligence, reconnaissance, and the use of precision-guided munitions, which played a significant part in the conflict. "Operation Desert Storm" critically assesses the outcomes of the war, including the immediate liberation of Kuwait, the long-term regional implications, and the lessons learned by the military and political leadership. The book also examines the humanitarian and environmental impact of the conflict, including the plight of refugees and the catastrophic oil spills. This book is an essential read for students of military history, international relations, and Middle Eastern studies, providing a well-rounded and in-depth understanding of Operation Desert Storm, a pivotal event in the history of modern warfare and international diplomacy.

"Freedman has collected an array of first-rate political analysts with differing perspectives and areas of expertise. . . . The result is a work of uniformly high quality . . . readable and up to date."--Jerrold D. Green, University of Arizona Center for Middle East Studies We may not live to see the end of the ripple effect of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 and the ensuing Gulf War. Meanwhile, this collection is one of the first systematic attempts to investigate the implications of that invasion for the significant political actors, in the Middle East and beyond. From varied perspectives and fields of interest, well-respected political scientists focus on the military dynamics of the war and its political effects on the Persian Gulf, on the Arab-Israeli zone of conflict, and on the superpowers. Of particular interest to many readers will be the analysis of both U.S. military and diplomatic strategy during the war and U.S. efforts to convene the Arab-Israeli peace talks after the war; Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's attempts to follow a "minimax" strategy under which he sought a minimum level of cooperation with the United States while retaining maximum influence in Iraq; the debate in Japan about whether to get involved in the Allied war effort; and the reasons for Palestinian support of Iraq during the war. Other subjects analyzed in the book include Saddam Hussein's postwar strategy for staying in power; Jordan's effort to walk a narrow tightrope between the Allies and Iraq; Syrian, Iranian, and Egyptian exploitation of the war to improve their regional positions; and the changes in Israel and Saudi Arabia precipitated by the war. Robert O. Freedman is Peggy Meyerhoff Pearlstone Professor of Political Science and dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Baltimore Hebrew University. He is the editor of Intifada: Its Impact on Israel, the Arab World, and the Superpowers (UPF, 1991) and a prolific author and frequent lecturer on the Middle East. For most Americans, the war against Iraq lingers in memory as a vast morality play, a drama offering ready made heroes and villains: a glowering dictator in military uniform, hapless Kuwaiti refugees with tales of persecution, plucky pilots with high-tech wizardry, and a defiant American president, ringing Churchillian as he drew a line in the sand. But this characterization of the war is greatly oversimplified, a one-dimensional portrait, lacking in context and nuance. In War in the Gulf, 1990 91, eminent scholars Majid Khadduri and Edmund Ghareeb paint a very different picture, one that brings historical depth to the portrait, and displays the actions of many of the participants in a new and revealing light. Khadduri and Ghareeb offer a far more accurate and complex portrait of the Iraq-Kuwait conflict, providing a wealth of background information not readily available before. They made a distinction between the differences between Iraq and Kuwait over frontiers, territory, and sovereignty and the method pursued by Iraqi leaders to resolve those differences. They explore, for instance, the history of relations between Iraq and Kuwait, revealing that Kuwait had once been a part of Basra (in southern Iraq) during the Ottoman rule, and only became a separate country while under British control (it was the British in fact who drew the much-disputed boundary line between Iraq and Kuwait). Khadduri and Ghareeb describe the many decades of struggle to resolve the boundary issue, examining the repeated attempts by other Arab states to mediate according to Islamic traditions of consultation and peaceful resolution within the faith. The authors also show how Saddam Husayn's war with Iran exacerbated the boundary tensions. Because of the decade-long war, Iraq badly needed oil revenue to repay wartime loans and to rebuild, but Kuwait persisted in pumping far beyond its OPEC quota, driving down prices, and costing Iraq billions of dollars of revenue. The book reveals how Kuwait spurned Arab attempts to mediate this clash over oil prices as well as the longstanding boundary dispute, frustrating efforts to resolve this crisis by peaceful means. In one particularly interesting section, the book examines the diplomatic talks during the early summer of 1990, both among various Arab nations (most notably, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Kuwait), and with Saddam Husayn and the United States (they show how messages from Washington and a visit by a congressional delegation lead by Senator Dole convinced the Iraqi leaders that they would be allowed to settle their problems with Kuwait without outside interference). Khadduri and Ghareeb carry us through to the present, exploring the war and its aftermath, from the uprisings against Baghdad, to the continuing U.N. sanctions, to the recent defections from Saddam's inner circle. War in the Gulf is a balanced, eye-opening account of one of the central events of recent years. It corrects the Western views of most reporting, explaining the frame of mind of the participants as no one has done before and causing us to examine anew such questions as who was responsible for the conflict, and what might have happened if the United States had not intervened so rapidly.

This case study examines the negotiations undertaken from August 2, 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, to February 25, 1991, when Radio Baghdad announced that Iraqi armed forces would withdraw to the positions they held prior to August 1, 1990. The study transforms the classroom into a policy planning council, with a series of questions that involve students in the simulated role of decision-maker. This study could be paired with "Forging Consensus: The Western Alliance and the Invasion of Kuwait" (Case Study 171); and "The Kuwait Crisis: Sanctions, Negotiations, and the Decision to Go to War" (Case Study 164).

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: 1,0, University of Balamand (Lebanon) (University of Balamand (Lebanon), Institute of Political Science), course: International Politics of the Middle East, 44 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Contrary to the first Gulf War between Iraq and Iran, the second Gulf War became very fast internationalized beyond all regional borders even if its roots were mainly placed in the broader regional environment. Especially the US was very concerned about the Iraqi invasion and its impact on the regional and on the international economical, political and military balance. The so called Gulf War III in the year 2003, which rooted to a big part in the second one, showed, that this concern kept on being vital for the US. This paper mainly focuses on two aspects of the Gulf Crisis of 1990/91, namely on the US Administration, its goals and its policy for the Middle East in general, and the Gulf region and Iraq specifically. Additionally it ll deal with the role of the United Nations or rather the Security Council and its permanent members during this crisis.

This volume of documents relates to the legal aspects of the international crisis arising out of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1996. It opens with a substantial section of documents dealing with the international status of both Iraq and Kuwait, to the evolution of their boundaries and to earlier episodes pertinent to the major events. It is followed by sections of documents presenting the fundamentals of the conflicting views on the situation, and a chapter containing relevant United Nations documents, together with extracts from the debates leading up to the resolutions adopted by the Security Council. The collection next covers specific problems that have arisen in the UN context, such as the adoption and implementation of the sanctions system, and concludes with the response of other international organizations.
