Excerpt from The Poor Man Four priests and two acolytes are seen like shadows before this palely lit background. One acolyte to the right of the table beats a little hoarse bell. This he does during the course of the Whole scene, in the following rhythm - 7 - 8 - 20 - 7 - 8 20. He should reach the lo5th beat at the end of the second hymn to Kwan-yin. The other acolyte stands by the drum and beats it softly at irregular intervals. The acolytes are little boys in long blue coats. The four priests stand at the table with their faces toward Kwan-yin; their robes are pale pink silk with a length of deeper apricot pink draped about the shoulders. A modern reclaiming of the ancient Chinese I Ching. Kwan Yin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy & Knowledge, is evoked in this adaptation of the ancient divinatory system. This book returns the I Ching to women's use and is a simple-to-use tool of great power. The book stands the I Ching side by side with the Tarot as an aspect of women's spirituality, and it is a remembering of the submerged skills of women's matriarchy.

The best and most comprehensive book on the most important and best-loved Chinese goddess. Walk down the streets of Chinatown in any American or western European city and look around. She is there. Walk through the downtown streets, look in a shop window. She is there. Go to any city in China and open your eyes. She is there, too. Kuan Yin is the most ubiquitous Chinese deity—and the most loved. She is the living expression of compassion whose gentle face and elegant figure form the center of devotion in most Chinese homes and workplaces. Until relatively recently, she was barely known in the West, and few studies had been made of her. Originally published as Kuan Yin by Harper Collins in 1995 (and republished as The Kuan Yin Chronicles by Hampton Roads in 2009), this seminal work explores the origins and evolution of the goddess in ancient China, early Buddhism, Taoism, and shamanism. Religious scholar Martin Palmer and Chinese divination expert Man-Ho Kwok discuss the Kuan Yin myths and stories, and Jay Ramsay provides fresh translations of 100 Kuan Yin poems that function both as literature and divination tools. “A compelling story that reads like a detective mystery . . . and shows the contemporary reassertion of the Goddess in the hearts and minds of men and women.” —Riane Eisler, author of The Chalice and the Blade. Previously published as The Kuan Yin Chronicles.

Excerpt from The Taoist Religion Not many years after this, Lao-tsz really did quit civilisa tion, and made for the Pass, near the Yellow River bend, a little to the eastward of modern Si-ngan Fu. The Pass was then practically the western frontier of federated China, and beyond it lay the powerful state of Ts'in, which ever since the ninth century before Christ had lain outside the pale, and had become, in the minds of the more orthodox federals, a semi-barbarous or foreign country - destined, however, soon to conquer China. The royal officer in charge of the Pass did not like to see so distinguished a philosopher as Lao-tsz disappear into space without leaving behind something of his doctrine to show to future genera tions, so he begged him to write a book first. (it must be explained that books were then thin plates of wood or bamboo, painfully scratched upon or cut into with a style; that composition was laconic and that the written character was much more clumsy and bulky than it is now.) Lao-tsz did so; and after that he went west, nothing more ever being heard of him. Many centuries later there were traditions of his having passed through Khoten all further developments of these traditions are mere yarns. It is supposed that one of his disciples may have Obtained this book from the keeper of the Pass, and subsequently given it out for copying, but there is no specific evidence upon this point, although under the name Kwan-yin-tsz the said keeper himself has left us a work on Taoism. Kuan Yin, the Compassionate One or literally 'the one who sees and hears the cries of the world' is the principal goddess in the eastern firmament. She is centuries older than the Christian Virgin Mary, but not unconnected with her in that in most illustrations she holds a rosary, suggesting purification of the cycle of birth and death, and a willow branch, a symbol of Buddhist virtues. Kuan Yin's image can be found wherever there are Chinese or Japanese speaking people in the world - in homes, restaurants, workplaces, small urban temples, Buddhist, Taoist and Shinto shrines - and the ritual of consulting her has brought solace, hope and insight to countless people. It continues to be an integral part of the lives of tens of millions of people throughout the East today. Stephen Karcher's interpretation of this ancient text presents 'The 100 Poems of the Goddess', to be as relevant today as they were 1000 years ago, leading the reader to answers to specific questions about family, professional success, travel, health and love.
