This book provides an accessible introduction to the theory of L-functions, emphasising their central role in number theory and their direct applications to key results. Designed to be elementary, it offers readers a clear pathway into the subject, starting from minimal background. It describes several important classes of L-functions — Riemann and Dedekind zeta functions, Dirichlet L-functions, and Hecke L-functions (for characters with finite image) — by showing how they are all special cases of the construction, due to Artin, of the L-function of a Galois representation. The analytic properties of abelian L-functions are presented in detail, including the full content of Tate's thesis, which establishes analytic continuation and functional equations via harmonic analysis. General Hecke L-functions are also discussed, using the modern perspective of idèles and adèles to connect their analytic theory with the representation-theoretic approach of Artin's L-functions. A distinguishing feature of this book is its accessibility: while largely avoiding arithmetic geometry, it provides introductions to both algebraic number theory and key aspects of representation theory. This approach ensures that the material is accessible to both beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Applications play a central role throughout, highlighting how L-functions underpin significant results in number theory. The book provides complete proofs of the prime number theorem, Dirichlet's theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions, Chebotarev's density theorem, and the analytic class number formula, demonstrating the power of the theory in solving classical problems. It serves as an ideal introduction for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students and can also be a useful reference for preparing a course on the subject.

This monograph brings together a collection of results on the non-vanishing of L functions. The presentation, though based largely on the original papers, is suitable for independent study. A number of exercises have also been provided to aid in this endeavour. The exercises are of varying difficulty and those which require more effort have been marked with an asterisk. The authors would like to thank the Institut d'Estudis Catalans for their encouragement of this work through the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize. We would also like to thank the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton for the excellent conditions which made this work possible, as well as NSERC, NSF and FCAR for funding. Princeton M. Ram Murty August, 1996 V. Kumar Murty Introduction Since the time of Dirichlet and Riemann, the analytic properties of L-functions have been used to establish theorems of a purely arithmetic nature. The distri bution of prime numbers in arithmetic progressions is intimately connected with non-vanishing properties of various L-functions. With the subsequent advent of the Tauberian theory as developed by Wiener and Ikehara, these arithmetical the orems have been shown to be equivalent to the non-vanishing of these L-functions on the line Re(s) = 1. In the 1950's, a new theme was introduced by Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.

These notes present recent results in the value-distribution theory of L-functions with emphasis on the phenomenon of universality. Universality has a strong impact on the zero-distribution: Riemann’s hypothesis is true only if the Riemann zeta-function can approximate itself uniformly. The text proves universality for polynomial Euler products. The authors’ approach follows mainly Bagchi's probabilistic method. Discussion touches on related topics: almost periodicity, density estimates, Nevanlinna theory, and functional independence.

Elliptic Curves Modular Forms And Their L Functions written by Álvaro Lozano-Robledo and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Mathematics categories.
Many problems in number theory have simple statements, but their solutions require a deep understanding of algebra, algebraic geometry, complex analysis, group representations, or a combination of all four. The original simply stated problem can be obscured in the depth of the theory developed to understand it. This book is an introduction to some of these problems, and an overview of the theories used nowadays to attack them, presented so that the number theory is always at the forefront of the discussion. Lozano-Robledo gives an introductory survey of elliptic curves, modular forms, and $L$-functions. His main goal is to provide the reader with the big picture of the surprising connections among these three families of mathematical objects and their meaning for number theory. As a case in point, Lozano-Robledo explains the modularity theorem and its famous consequence, Fermat's Last Theorem. He also discusses the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture and other modern conjectures. The book begins with some motivating problems and includes numerous concrete examples throughout the text, often involving actual numbers, such as 3, 4, 5, $\frac{3344161}{747348}$, and $\frac{2244035177043369699245575130906674863160948472041} {8912332268928859588025535178967163570016480830}$. The theories of elliptic curves, modular forms, and $L$-functions are too vast to be covered in a single volume, and their proofs are outside the scope of the undergraduate curriculum. However, the primary objects of study, the statements of the main theorems, and their corollaries are within the grasp of advanced undergraduates. This book concentrates on motivating the definitions, explaining the statements of the theorems and conjectures, making connections, and providing lots of examples, rather than dwelling on the hard proofs. The book succeeds if, after reading the text, students feel compelled to study elliptic curves and modular forms in all their glory.

Advanced Analytic Number Theory L Functions written by Carlos J. Moreno and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Mathematics categories.
Since the pioneering work of Euler, Dirichlet, and Riemann, the analytic properties of L-functions have been used to study the distribution of prime numbers. With the advent of the Langlands Program, L-functions have assumed a greater role in the study of the interplay between Diophantine questions about primes and representation theoretic properties of Galois representations. This book provides a complete introduction to the most significant class of L-functions: the Artin-Hecke L-functions associated to finite-dimensional representations of Weil groups and to automorphic L-functions of principal type on the general linear group. In addition to establishing functional equations, growth estimates, and non-vanishing theorems, a thorough presentation of the explicit formulas of Riemann type in the context of Artin-Hecke and automorphic L-functions is also given. The survey is aimed at mathematicians and graduate students who want to learn about the modern analytic theory of L-functions and their applications in number theory and in the theory of automorphic representations. The requirements for a profitable study of this monograph are a knowledge of basic number theory and the rudiments of abstract harmonic analysis on locally compact abelian groups.
