Cet ouvrage propose un nouveau regard sur l’un des engagements les plus constants de l’abbé Grégoire, figure emblématique de la lutte pour les droits de l’homme, panthéonisé à ce titre en 1989 : sa lutte contre la traite négrière, l’esclavage et le « préjugé de couleur », c’est-à-dire le racisme, et ceci jusqu’à l’extrême fin de sa vie, en 1831. Les fondements chrétiens de sa conception de l’unité de l’espèce humaine, sa lutte pendant la Révolution pour l’égalité des couleurs, puis l’abolition de l’esclavage votée le 4 février 1794, son soutien actif à l’indépendance d’Haïti, combats poursuivis sous l’Empire et surtout sous la Restauration, sont autant de thèmes traités par les études réunies dans ce volume. Un autre aspect, moins souvent souligné, est également abordé : la mission civilisatrice et christianisatrice de l’Europe, notamment vers l’Afrique pour y abolir la traite et y faire prospérer une économie fondée sur les sciences et les arts. Homme des « Lumières chrétiennes », Grégoire fut l’un des plus résolus dans la lutte pour l’extension des principes de 1789 aux peuples non-européens, avec toutes les ambiguïtés dont ce message était porteur et que les contributions réunies ici ne masquent pas.
