This open access book provides insight into the domestic space of people with an immigrant or refugee background. It selects and compares a whole spectrum of dwelling conditions with ethnographic material covering a variety of national backgrounds - Latin America, North and West Africa, Eastern Europe, South Asia - and an equally broad range of housing, household and legal arrangements. Il ritmo con cui scorre il tempo, la scansione temporale dell’attesa e i raccordi tra tempi vissuti, narrati e immaginati non sono né naturali né predeterminati. Nei prolungati iter burocratici, nonché nelle frizioni tra temporalità biografiche, aspirazioni future e tempi dell’accoglienza, i richiedenti asilo continuano tenacemente a creare uno spazio-tempo quotidiano che contrasta con la precarietà temporale ed esistenziale che spesso pervade la loro esperienza in Italia. Al giorno d’oggi, in carcere, sono pochi i detenuti che studiano, e in una casa circondariale come quella di San Vittore a Milano – dove si rimane per lo più in attesa di giudizio – gli studenti sono ancora meno. Elena D’Incerti si domanda cosa significhi riprendere la scuola quando si ha un vissuto problematico, dopo anni di traversie personali e di emarginazione sociale, e prova a spiegarlo. Abituata alle aule di un liceo classico della Milano “bene” – dove lo studio è un privilegio dato per scontato –, l’autrice si confronta per la prima volta con il dramma dell’emarginazione nella quotidianità del carcere, entrando nel vivo di un mondo che, seppur collocato nel centro della città, in pochi conoscono davvero. In due anni di lavoro, D’Incerti ha proposto ai detenuti la scrittura in funzione terapeutica, ha provato a riavvicinare studenti adulti (o quasi) al gusto della lettura e, soprattutto, ha rivisto i propri preconcetti e pregiudizi, consolidando invece le proprie convinzioni: in tema di disuguaglianze, la scuola rimane un’opportunità, qualcosa cui garantire l’accesso universale.

I Racconti di donne dal Mediterraneo, sono quelli delle migranti che abbiamo ascoltato nel corso della ricerca in Sicilia, al centro di questo mare. The rights of children are outlined in article 24 of the Charter of fundamental rights of the European Union; the binding catalogue of rights which institutions and member states are bound to respect when applying EU law. Although this article has undoubtedly been taken very seriously since the Charter was adopted in 2000, there are indications that in a number of cases it has not been possible for children in the EU to exercise fully the rights it envisaged. One such case involves migrating Romanian children, and concerns have been expressed that the rights of this group of migrant children have not always been fully taken into account. This book is the result of the two-year project "Children’s rights in Action", funded by the European Union, which focuses on the needs of children migrating from Romania to Italy and Spain in order to identify good practices, reduce their vulnerability and protect their rights. The book presents the impact that limited access to the rights guaranteed by EU law have had on the actual conditions of life for Romanian children in migration across Europe. Although the book shows that the rights enshrined in article 24 of the EU Charter are not yet fully and equally ensured in some EU countries, it also describes the ways in which local communities and civil society actors have often operated to fill the gap and enabled such children to exercise their rights despite legislative and political shortcomings.
