Blood libels are myths that evolve in particular historical contexts; an analysis of their political, religious, and economic aspects is essential for a further understanding of their diffusion. These factors were central to the use of the blood libel by some dominant secular and ecclesiastic groups for propagandistic goals. Criticizes use of "psychohistory" to explain the psychological aspects of blood libels; such interpretations absolve persons and institutions from historical, ethical, and political responsibility.

Roma gennaio 1869: Giambattista Bugatti detta le sue memorie allo scrittore Ernesto Mezzabotta. Roma, inverno 1859. Ma quando il bambino e la balia verranno trovati trucidati, omicidi ai quali ne seguiranno altri, a quelle prime ipotesi se ne dovranno aggiungere altre. Gelosia? Oppure si deve dar credito a “l’accusa del sangue”, il mito secondo il quale gli ebrei userebbero il sangue dei bambini cristiani per scopi rituali? O le ragioni di quel “furore assassino”, risiedono altrove? Describes the circumstances of the Damascus blood libel of 1840 as related in "Aceldama", a book published in Cagliari, 1896. Analyzes the anti-Jewish accusation of ritual murder in the broader context of ritual anthropology and vampirism associated with infanticide and deicide, and demonization of the Jews. States that persecution stems from reversion of myths: the relative decadence of the myth of Christ's blood (eucharistic sacrifice) generates guilt feelings among Christians who transfer them onto the Jews, subsequently punishing them. Furthermore, ritual vampirism is extrapolated to economic vampirism, i.e. usury. Pp. 93-128, by David Bidussa, elaborate on Jesi's "mythological machine" or myth reversion theory as an interpretation of the blood libel and of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion".

This book makes use of newly available archival sources to reexamine the Roman Catholic Church’s policy, from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, of coercing the Jews of Rome into converting to Christianity. Marina Caffiero, one of the first historians permitted access to important archives, sets individual stories of denunciation, betrayal, pleading, and conflict into historical context to highlight the Church’s actions and the Jewish response. Caffiero documents the regularity with which Jews were abducted from the Roman ghetto and pressured to accept baptism. She analyzes why some Jewish men, interested in gaining a business advantage, were more inclined to accept conversion than the women. The book exposes the complexity of relations between the papacy and the Jews, revealing the Church not as a monolithic entity, but as a network of competing institutions, and affirming the Roman Jews as active agents of resistance.
